Erectile Dysfunction Affiliation Erectile Dysfunction is usually described as the condition where a man is unable to get and maintain an erection. This condition is mostly prevalent in older men as opposed to the younger men. Statistics shows that half of the population of men will have this condition when they are between forty to seventy years of age. Causes of Erectile DysfunctionEndocrine diseases, such as diabetes, can lead to impotence as they cause nerve damage that mostly affects the penis sensations.

They also impair blood flow and hormone levels, which may lead to weakness. Neurological and nerve disorders, for example, stroke, brain tumors and multiple sclerosis, can affect how the brain communicates with a man’s reproductive system hence leading to erectile dysfunction. Pelvic surgery can cause damage to the nerve supply to the penis as a result of the injury accrued to the cavernous nerves during transurethral resection of the prostate hence leading to erectile dysfunction.Erectile Dysfunction DrugsOne of the best methods to treat erectile dysfunction is by the administration of drugs.

The following drugs can be administered to treat the condition:Viagra (sildenafil) is an inhibitor that helps the effect of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide permits the smooth muscles inside the penis to unwind, elevating more blood to the penis during sexual arousal. Viagra is at a dose of around 50 milligrams. Other drugs include Levitra (vardenafil hydrochloride) and Cialis (tadalafil), which function in a similar manner as Viagra. Apart from these three drugs, phentolamine, papaverine hydrochloride and Caverject may be used to ease blood flow to the penis.

As a nurse, I would educate on the side effects of these drugs and also discourage the excess usage of the drugs. ReferenceKandeel, F. R. (2007). Male sexual dysfunction: Pathophysiology and treatment. New York, NY: Informa Healthcare USA.
