Relating a book to community nursing Introduction Community health nursing is a fundamental aspect of nursing that strives to synthesize the practices of nursing and public health with the view to promoting and protecting the health of a population. Community health nursing is a comprehensive care often mandated with the prevention, curing and rehabilitation of various health cases in a society. This report contextualizes community health nursing by relating the characters in a novel to community health nursing (Holzemer, 2012). The report investigates the various challenges that a number of characters in the novel, Even me by Irvine Saint-Vilus. In doing this, the report shows the various resources of community health nursing, their importance and applicability in preventing, curing and rehabilitating various health care cases in a community. Characters The plot of the novel follows the life of Micah Lambert who is also its lead character. After losing his eyesight, Micah loses his inheritance too. He progressively becomes engrossed with success and eventually becomes a successful entrepreneur. Despite such, Micah often reminisces his past a feature that instils a fear in him as he thinks about the future. As the novel’s lead character, Micah portray unique personality traits that help position him at the center of conflicts in the novel. Additionally, the unique personality traits help in portraying the importance of community health nursing. Daniela Victor is yet another major character in the novel. She is a preacher who devotes herself to helping the needy in a society. Her aspirations and religious lifestyle does not impress his family who had wished that she pursued a career given the fact that she has a college degree. Daniela is therefore torn between her passion and the dictates of her family. She chooses to follow her dream a feature that makes her family overlook her in a number of serious occasions. When Daniela meets Micah later in the novel, they make a perfect match as they initiate a love relationship (Saint-Vilus, 2014). However, their past fears often haunt them. The relationship between Micah and Daniela helps show the importance of community health nursing as the two care both for themselves and for others. Frances is Daniela’s friend. She influences some of the decisions that Daniela makes. They work together and often spend their free time together. The closeness between Daniela and Frances helps show the level of diversity that exists in a community. Unlike Daniela, Frances is not religious and hardly goes to church. However, she respects Daniela and strives to limit their interactions to the values they share. Frances is a significant character in the novel since she influences the plot by showing the contrast between her and Daniela. In doing this, she makes the need for community health nursing conspicuous. Challenges Micah Lambert’s main challenge is the blindness. His predicament begins immediately he loses his eyesight. He was a smart and hardworking young man who proved to be the best heir to his father’s business empire. However, when he lost his eyesight, his father’s attitude changed. His father therefore handed over the family business to his younger brother Mark. His other challenge is his inability to shake off the resentment he feels for his past. The resentment affects his psychological wellbeing, as he fears for the future. Thoughts of his past coupled with his loneliness especially at the beginning of the novel affects his social wellbeing. While he is a successful entrepreneur, he fears for his future given the treatment he received from his family soon after he became blind. Daniela Victor has a number of challenges as well key among which is the fact that his family disregarded and overlooked her in most occasions. The fact that she chose to be a preacher and a social worker conflicted with her family’s aspirations for her. As such, the family often overlooked her existence and did not always consult her in a number of important family matters. Additionally, Daniela faces gender biases from the society. Her childhood, which was, characterized with violence haunt her thereby affecting her psychological wellbeing. Frances, Daniela’s best friend just as is the case with many other characters in the novel faces yet a number of challenges key among which is her free spirited attitude. While such an attitude makes her a good and reliable friend to Daniela, it often lands her in problems with a number of people in the society such as her managers at the library where she worked. Her other challenge is an emotional and psychological instability. She lives in denial often considering herself a heathen. Resources Despite the numerous challenges the characters face, they have a number of equally effective resources that community health nursing argues would help them overcome their challenges. Micah Lambert for example has Daniela who proves to be a vital resource. Additionally, he is financially stable and therefore enjoys immense financial resource. Daniela’s resources include her faith in Christianity and her companionship with Micah that develops later in the novel. Micah helps create a new society for Daniela a feature that safeguards her physical and psychological wellbeing. Frances just a any other character in the novel has a number of important community health nursing resources. Her resources include her friendship with Daniela and her job. Importance of resource Micah’s financial security is a vital resource since it makes it possible for the character to afford any health service. When he lost his eyesight for example, he easily purchased all the necessary equipment capable of enhancing his life. He did this while staying with his parents. His parents were equally financial stable and could therefore afford any facility required to make his life better. As he grew, he worked hard and ensured that he could afford any health product and service he would require. His companionship with Daniela later in the novel proves to be a significant resource since Daniela offers him the psychological and physical support he requires to overcome his challenges. The same is the case with Daniela as Micah grows to become one of her closest confidants. Micah offers becomes a caring and loving partner who helps her overcome her various psychological challenges. Her religious faith is an equally important resource in this context since it provides her with a peaceful mind. Peace and psychological stability is a vital feature that influences the wellbeing of an individual and the stability of a community. Daniela is a good friend and therefore a fundamental resource for Frances. She promises to take her to church one day a feature that shows that she always offers her psychological support. The fact that she has both a job and education makes her a productive and holistic individual. The two are her vital resources that make it possible for her to access basic health services in the community. Conclusion In retrospect, community health nursing is a significant aspect of health care that contributes to the development of a healthy population. It does this by attempting to promoting and preserving the health of a community (Holzemer, 2012). Community health nursing contributes to the education about, promotion of and maintenance of good health. Psychological wellbeing is a major source of concern in community health nursing. Stress causes immense health complications. Community health nursing therefore attempt to offer appropriate remedies for stress related conditions in an attempt to prevent an occurrence of a health complication related to stress. The various characters in the novel, Even me have varied psychological problems. However, they have effective resources most of which shows the nature of community health nursing and its importance in providing quality and reliable care thereby enhancing the health of a population.
