Over the past several years, United Sates continues to witness a key transformation in the understanding of having a developmental disability, including the notable move from the medical based models for care to the social models, which incorporate an interdisciplinary approach to identification, support and delivery of support services and recourses within the community (Sheppard & Unsworth, 2011). However, despite these milestones in the care services and resources in the community, considerable barriers to the entire integration and establishment of maximum independence for the developmental disability care. Thus, in facilitating access to care services and resources for the individuals with a disability, the family is a crucial component. The family receives support from the waiver systems, which reduce the costs incurred in accessing care services for their family members who suffer the disabilities. Further, the emancipation programs for the community help the family in accepting the given situation and facilitating support for the individual.
