SMART GOAL affiliation Core competence Following a review of the institute of medicine (IMO) report on core health care competencies, I realized one weakness with my employees, and that is they need a redress in regard with stipulated competencies of IMO. The key competency for redress is employing evidence-based practice in bettering the care of patients. If the problem with use of evidenced information in practice is addressed, then patients will have better outcome. The identified competency, evidence-based practice, will be used to develop my leadership development SMART goal with an aim of improving healthcare delivery. Skill, knowledge, and attribute In working out the core competency, some critical aspects must be considered. The aspect to be put on considerations is the skill, knowledge and attributes (KSA) that is related with this competency. The only KSA that is related with core competencies is using evidence to guide nursing practice. In unison, the core competence and the KSA will be used to form a leadership development smart goal. Leadership development smart goal I will research on benefits of using evidence-based practice on employees who commit errors while doing nursing procedures in hospital, after I seek approval from the hospital manager. Review nursing procedure manual and guidelines, and convene a meeting with organizers of continuous medical education. Review scholarly articles and credible databases to obtain information on how using evidence to guide your practice can benefit the employees by November 24, 2014 (MacLeod, 2012). Action plan to work out the leadership smart goal 1. Seek approval to review the organizations policies and schedule a meeting/interview with the hospital manager by November 11, 2014. 2. Review the nursing procedure manual and guidelines current that dictate nursing practice in the hospital by November 12, 2014. 3. Convening a meeting with the organizers of continuous medical education by November 13, 2014 4. Review scholarly articles in the American Journal of Nursing and Journal of Advanced Nursing by November 17, 2014. 5. Evaluate the findings from the above resources by November 24, 2014. Seeking approval from authority As policy dictates for any other institution, one has to seek approval before any investigative or research is done. This is usually done to safe guide the interest of others who might be implicated on the research if the motive of the research is bad. To avoid researches that might wrongfully implicated on any research the motive must be assessed. On approval one need to display the proposal of the research and what he or she is seeking to achieve. With this very reason, I had to seek for the approval from the hospital manager in order to get the consent and a go ahead letter to pursue my research on the benefit of evidenced practice in the hospital set up on the employees that commit many errors for the absence of using evidence to guide their practice. This should come first on the action plan. Review current procedure manual and guidelines Next on the action plan was to review the procedure manuals and the guidelines being used in the practice. The intention is to identify the most current position of the employees with regard of material being used to practice in the hospital. This one of the problem identifying process that will determine the course of action to redress the problem. The expectation of the review is to find the employee using material that are not fully or totally updated. With very old procedures, many of the employees could be depending on the reading material that no longer apply to the practice due to the changes that come with novel evidence that suits certain practices. On the event that the reading material such as procedure manual and the guidelines being used are much updated then another course of action will be taken to determine the problem. Convening a meeting with the organizers of continuous medical education This action was also in attempt of problem finding in the team that is mandated to educate the employees on the most current practice in the hospital. The practice that they impart to the employees should be in tandem with the most current practice. In convening a meeting, the role was to determine if they execute their roles properly and as required by the institution. The material that they use to make up the continuous medical education to their employees was also mandatory to know if they much updated. On the event the medical procedure they educated the other employees was based on very old literature then it will be possible to connect the dots and tell what could be leading to the errors during the entire process of serving the patients. Evidence practice is solely based on much updated literature. The purpose of employing evidence based practice is to take the latest evidence from research and use it to guide patient care to achieve the best possible outcomes for the patient. It is more of consuming the much latest research to better the patient care. For this reason the latest research on the patient care should be used instead of very antiquated material that may lead to very low quality care of the patient. More research such one conducted by Laibhen (2014) has shown that integration of evidence-based practice has a lot of benefits in health care to the patient and the care giver. One of the merits of implementing evidence based practice by health professional like nurses is getting outcome that is higher in quality that improve on the prognosis of the patient because evidence based practice incorporate latest research evidence that resulted in a better care at the point of care. Another merit of using evidence based practice is that it reduces on errors that were committed that led to the initiation of the research to change the care. According to Schaffer, (2013) is the errors that induces the need of research which initiate a cascade of research to avoid the errors committed before. In light with this, using evidence based practice call for the use of the very latest research that has been developed. In doing so, much of the repeated errors committed will be avoided if latest materials are used in the point of care and the outcome will be good for the patient. Consequently, the resources both for the nation and the patient for the provision of heath care will be spared from wastage. More so, using evidence to guide practice will not only enrich the nurse’s c performance, but will also lead to higher job satisfaction. The satisfaction from the job will in turn enhance a bolstered group cohesion which solidify job retention in health care and reduce high turnover in the hospital (Schaffer, 2013). With reduced turnover of nurses due to absence of job satisfaction will spare the resources that will otherwise be used on job recruitment. Evaluate the findings from the above resources From the evaluation of the resources above, it is very imperative that the institution adopt evidence-based practice to improve the outcome and the quality of care of patient. Interestingly, using evidence to guide the practice does not only merit the patient or the care giver a lone but the entire institution in increasing the job retention and sparing the resources that otherwise will be wasted on job recruitment.
