Comparison of Two Nursing Education Systems Affiliation: Nurses play an important role in the contemporary healthcare industry. Over the years, nursing practices have undergone significant changes in a bid to make healthcare more effective and efficient. In particular, nursing education continues to improve across the globe. United States among other countries leads in ensuring that patients access affordable and high quality care. In comparison, the Philippines follow the same path by providing nurses for domestic and international healthcare environments.

Nursing education is essentially divided into two components, which are theoretical and practical training. The theoretical part of nursing education introduces nurse students to the healthcare environment and what their duties and responsibilities as nurses. When it comes to practical training, the objective is to equip nurses with hands-on skills and experience that allow them to execute the required duties and responsibilities. In this respect, nursing is a critical component of the health system infrastructure.

The bid to enhance healthcare system is subject to the influence of many different factors. Successful health systems capitalize on the availability of human resources, which in this case include all healthcare practitioners. This makes nurses a critical part of the success story therein. In enhancing health system infrastructure, one of the primary goals is to ensure that nurse-patient ratio remains favorable to the welfare of the general population. What this means is that nursing is just as important as any other healthcare aspect.

The requirements of entry into nursing practice vary from one country to another. In the United States, nursing education and practice entry programs are divided into four levels, namely: hospital-based diploma, associate degree at hospital-based level or at community college level, bachelor’s degree, and master’s degree or higher (Shulman, 2009). The first three levels are mostly common as entry point requirements while the last one is relatively less common.States play a major role in regulating nursing in the United States.

Every State has its own approaches and mechanisms of regulating nursing practices. Amid state-level regulation, the American Nurses Association plays a fundamental role in the healthcare setting. This association works with state governments in matters of funding, continued competence, and nursing education advancement (Hawkins, 2011). The primary goal of nursing regulation is to ensure that nurses are not only responsible and accountable, but also to promote progressive skills and experience development in a dynamic healthcare environment.

In comparison, the Philippines’ nursing education is closely related to that of the United States. Both theoretical and practical training are provided to nurse students to prepare them for the actual working environment. In Philippines, however, the minimum education requirement for entry into nursing is a bachelor’s degree in nursing (Connell, 2008). Similar to the United States, all nurses must be successfully registered before they can practice nursing. A notable difference between nursing in the United States and Philippines is that Philippines train nurses for export, over and above training nurses for domestic healthcare facilities.

Some nurses graduate in Philippines and then relocate to work in foreign countries. In the United States, most nurses practice within the country, and more so within their state of registration. Finally yet importantly, nursing regulation in Philippines falls under the docket of the Professional Regulation Commission (Barkan, 2013). This commission oversees all nursing practices, an observation that contrasts with the United States.ReferencesBarkan, E. R. (2013).
