For instance, I learned that the first stage of labour assessment begins at the first contact between the caregiver and the woman. It is preferable for the caregiver to have the woman’s prenatal record when speaking to the woman during the admission process. This stage involves checking whether the labour experienced by the woman is false or true. If the labour is true the woman has to be admitted. Various factors are assessed in order to identify true labour (London & Old, 2008). They include intervals and intensity of the labour contractions, the dilation of the cervix and the fetus conditions.
The other assessment at this stage includes conducting a diagnostic test to find more information about the woman’s health status. Apart from assessing the labour status and the health conditions of the women, other factors such as psychosocial and cultural factors are also assessed at this stage. If the labour is true and the woman’s health condition is not good, it may result in maternal death, the woman will not give birth normally. Other strategies such as caesarean will be used (London & Old, 2008).
During the second stage, caregivers assess things such as the fetal status which include its position and heart rate. This stage also involves the assessment of cervical dilation. Stage two usually starts when the cervix has dilated to 10 centimetres. The contraction of the uterine wall will also be assessed. A normal contraction at this stage should last for about 45 to 90 seconds. The position and the visibility of the baby will also be assessed at this stage. The behaviours of the woman are also assessed at this stage.
For instance behaviours such as the urge to push are usually assessed (London & Old, 2008). I realized that nurses play a vital role during the labour stages. They give both physical and emotional support to the woman and her family in the entire process (London & Old, 2008). For instance, during the admission stage, they usually help in assessing the risk factors and the fetal status. They also monitor the well being of the mother and the child in each process of childbirth. They also establish a good relationship with the women in order to meet their needs effectively.
Nurses support family members by engaging them through communication and being friendly (London & Old, 2008). Watching the woman give birth reminded me of my own experiences with births. I found it amazing and a little scary. However, I realized one does not realize how scary it can be when giving birth. Even after giving birth twice, I did not know how the placenta looked like. After watching the women give birth I could clearly see how it looks like. Watching them also made me realize how strong I am since one goes through a lot during childbirth (London & Old, 2008).
Watching the deliveries made me feel that the whole process of childbirth is fascinating. For the upcoming clinical, I expect to acquire more knowledge and experience because obstetrics is one of the two fields I am planning to major in.
