To create a good working condition, I always wear several hats like being an expert clinician, a mentor, supporting staff members, and advocating for patients and families tirelessly. Since I worked as a nurse, we have had a good relationship with staff members and this has made my career successful. I live in Richmond town. The goals of my course are to understand the main causes of bipolar disorder, its signs, and symptoms, to understand in detail the four types of a mood episode in bipolar disorder, how to treat the diseases, and the varying cost of treatment. I will also like to learn how to train an individual on how to handle the disorder on their own and know how to provide guiding and counseling to patients.
My case study will be about the care of Susie who is suffering from bipolar disease. The patient is a 22 years old student. For over a week, he has gone without asleep and throughout the week he has spent time in a heightened state of activity, she can’t control what he is doing. He has developed strange and grandiose behavior that takes a mystical tone, he also forgets what he always does and he has started writing notes so as not to forget what he is doing.
The policy issues related to Susie's case include the enforcement of nondiscrimination laws; Susie has been facing discrimination in school according to his friends and this made her become stressed. Stress is one of the main causes of bipolar disorder, discrimination against Susie also leads to poor healthy working life balance which ends up causing bipolar. Title VII of The Civil Rights Act, 1964 prohibits “discrimination in terms and conditions of work on the ground of race, color, national origin, sex, and religion. The school atmosphere for Susie has not been favorable. The poor studying environment resulted in hostility, mistrust, and rivalry which lead to depression because it spreads negative attitudes and harms the relationship between Susie and other students.
Another policy is taking the right food. Healthy eating will help prevent lifestyle diseases that could easily result in bipolar. Susie's school does not provide a balanced diet and they normally provide baked foods that are rich in cholesterol. Good eating habits include avoiding food substances that are in red meat and saturated fats, eating a balanced diet containing nutrient-dense and protective food like fruits and vegetables will help prevent diseases. The last policy is following the right medication. Susie should be provided with mood-stabilizing medicine together with psychotherapy so as to minimize the disease and control the symptoms.
Nursing is involved in the care because it assisted Susie to get better control of their mood swings and similar symptoms through guiding and counseling. The disease is also lifelong and it can recur at any time, this means that the disease requires long-term medication which is provided by the nurses throughout. The nurses will ensure that Susie maintains taking the prescribed medicine, attending psychotherapy, and taking the right food. Nurses also provided the right lifestyle advice to Susie. This includes doing regular exercise to avoid diseases that can lead to bipolar, planning well for the activities that a patient is preparing to undergo, the importance of having enough sleep, and eating healthy.
My position is that bipolar disorder is treatable diseases and the best way to treat the diseases is to offer to stabilize medication, the medicine that was given to Susie by the doctor include lithium (treats mania), Depakote (treats mania), Lamictal (for maintenance of the symptoms of bipolar disorder), and Neurontin, Topamax, and Trileptal which are anticonvulsant medications together with psychotherapy. Nursing care should also be provided to Susie so as to ensure that she follows medication well through since bipolar is a recurring disorder and it takes longer to be treated. Lastly, proper education and healthy eating can easily prevent the disease unlike when a person is suffering from the ailment and be taken for treatment.
My classmate like my case issue since the problems Susie was going through have been experienced by many of my classmates but it has not reached a state of becoming a bipolar disorder.
