Medical Staff Perception on the Safety of Patients - Research Paper Example

The literature review presents various literature related to patients’ safety within the hospitals.  The literature review presents the knowledge gap. Whereby from the review it is evident that researchers have conducted research on the issues of patients’ safety though, they did not conduct research on how to handle the issue of patients’ safety by the frontline medical staff.

The study took place at Alexandria University. The target populations were the nursing students within the insinuations. The study used convenience sampling procedures and the sample size was 400 clinical staff members working in the intensive care unit. The safety survey climate was used to obtain information from the respondents. Most of these institutions that the study was conducted in were government hospitals affiliated with Alexandria University. The study used purposive sampling so as to obtain accurate information.

 The study used the following research instruments to obtain data from the respondents. The safety climate survey instruments were in turn translated into Arabic for ease interpretations by the respondents. The responses from the survey were measured on a 5 point Likert scale. The respondents have added another tool that elicited responses based on their job categories ages and years of work experience. The reliability and validity of the instruments were tested by relevant authorities with experience in research. A pilot study was conducted to improve data collection tools. The study used a survey design in obtaining information this was appropriate in this research because surveys are used to obtain people’s perceptions and believes.

Data were analyzed using EPI info statistical data analysis procedures, where data were cross-tabulated and descriptive analysis obtained. The study found that the majority of the respondents conveyed a negative perception of patients’ safety. Physicians’ perceptions were higher than nurses and paramedical personal. Perceptions of medical officers working in general wards were more negative than those working in the ICU. Lastly, a negative correlation was obtained between subjects’ years of experience and perceptions about patient safety and management commitment. 

The study failed to present research ethical issues, and the study results do support conclusions presented in the research. The research findings can be used in other research areas like to investigate the reasons for negative perceptions of the medical staff and management towards the patients’ safety.
