Breakfast at Tiffany’sBreakfast at Tiffany’s is a romantic American comedy film with the starring being Audrey Hepburn who acts as Holly Golightly. She is portrayed as a naïve, unusual societal girl and as the film begins, she is seen alighting from a yellow taxi at Tiffany & Co, walks past the door to look into the windows as she eats the pastry and the coffee she had brought (0:00–0:45, no implied temporal ellipses).Holly Golightly plays the guitar as the narrator oftenly hears her playing and singing as she sits at the fire escape.
The song is known as moon river. This song is the identifier and the unofficial theme song for the movie. The song is featured at the beginning and at the end of the movie. The analysis I will focus on is specifically for the time between 00:41:55-00:43:55.Holly is seen with dark glasses which prevent people from seeing what’s behind them. This symbolizes that she is hiding what she feels. The moon river music played in the background just enhances the character of Holly as she keeps a distant from the surrounding signified by the dark glasses as they are a physical way of covering herself up and avoids exposure of her inner feelings.
Another thing to note is the that being an early morning and Holly goes to Tiffany & Co, it symbolizes that she is probably escaping to safety as she pauses at the door of this company like conceptualizing the satisfaction Tiffany offers to her. During the review time of 00:41:55-00:43:55, there is constant use of diegetic sound of the song “ moon river” and this increases recognition, meaning as well as the pleasure that binds the theme to the Holly’s character’s representation as the song is congruent to the mood of the movie.
The leitmotiv which is described as a musical element involving narrative functions such as those signifying the character of the actor has been used to show the yearning of Holly and this increases the narrative power of the music used and the pleasure it brings to the movie. The tempo of the diegetic music quickens as she walks past the company to stand at a window and the music now easens. Therefore the music has been used to describe the events happening in the film with the variation of the music tempo signifying a change in the character’s behavior (0:00–0:42, no implied temporal ellipses).
The use of digitized sound alerts the viewer of the unfolding events of the film and one is attentive to follow what will happen next as the elegant lady with a long black dress, complimented with a hat and dark glasses walks towards Tiffany & Co. The role of the music is to compliment the personality of the character of Holly. She is seen to alight from a yellow taxi in an early morning and she walks past Tiffany & Co and proceeds to stand at a window. At this time, the background music continues which plays easily as she walks to stop at the window.
The role of the played music at this time is to emphasize on the soil as Holly does not utter a word (0:00–0:43, no implied temporal ellipses). As a directorial device, it connects the viewer emotionally to the scene being watched and enhances the curiosity of what will happen next in the movie. Another role of the music played is to illustrate the movement of Holly as she walks out of the cab which is easy just as the music played.Work CitedDeepsandwich.
