Music: Imagination & Technique Sonic Meditation Sonic Meditations are necessary for group work over an extended time and require no special skill for individuals to participate. With continuous participation, Sonic Meditations have been shown to result in heightened sense of awareness, changes in psychology and physiology from unknown and known tensions to relaxations, which progressively become permanent. Pauline Oliveros composition of Sonic Meditations practice stemmed from her interest in the healing power of sonic energy.

They are an attempt to return the control of the sound to an individual, and within groups for healing purposes. The procedure involves making sound, imagining sound, listening to present sound and recalling past sound. In practice, while attention is focused to a point, it is possible to remain aware of inner and outer reality simultaneously. Attention can intensify one’s awareness, which supports one’s attention. Deep ListeningDeep listening involves paying attention to everything, which one can hear including sounds of nature, daily life, personal thoughts and musical sounds by expanding one’s attention.

The values of this esthetic are sharing of the creative process, cooperation with others and competition with oneself in to improve one’s ability of effective listening. Pauline Oliveros tells of two forms attention, which are focal and global attention. Focal attention consists of commitment to a particular sound while global attention involves an expanded listen to everything that is around an individual without commitment to any particular sound. It is probable to find a balance between these two forms, the internal world of memory and imagination, and the outer world sensation.

An illustration of this is by several forms of meditation including antiphonal meditation, circle sound meditation, the tuning meditation, urban mediation and the country meditation.
