Concert Report A. Pene Pati who is a young promising academic singer with his perfect tenor voice arrived to San Francisco with his solo program. Sun Ha Yoon played the piano during the concert. In was interesting to learn that Pene Pati was born in New Zealand and Sun Ha Yoon came from Korea. B. The program of the concert was amazing due to the number of languages in it. For instance, it contained a few songs in English by Roger Quilter which were represented by Go lovely rose, Take, O take those lips away and O mistress mine. There were selections of French composers which included Après un reve, Rencontre, Toujours and Adieu by Gabriel Faure and Oh guand je dors by Franz Liszt. German composers and their pieces were also numerous; they were represented by Ruhe, meine seele, Ach weh mir ungluckhaftem man and Heimliche Aufforderung by Richard Strauss. Several pieces by Tosti added Italian passion to the concert; they were represented by A Vucchella, Non T’amo Piu, Ideale, L’alba Separa Dalla Luce L’ombra and Marechiare. One piece in Spanish by Pablo Sarozabal added some temper to the performance. Rare Maori and Samoa languages were represented by a couple of folk songs followed by the nice guitar accompaniment. C. I was an attentive listener during the concert. First of all, I know that I had to write the concert report after it, so I concentrated on singing to provide more comprehensive analysis of the performance. Second of all, the concert was engaging because Pati turned to be a very pleasant and funny young singer who could easily attract attention of people and make them laugh. All pieces listed in the program were new for me. I was familiar with other compositions by Liszt and Strauss, but they were instrumental. D. The whole concert was aimed at revealing the power and beauty of Pati’s voice. His tenor was outstanding as well as his singing techniques. It was easy to indentify that the voice belonged to a young man due to the fact that it was very pure. The piano performed the main accompaniment. A couple of folk songs were followed by the guitar. In fact, they would never sound better with any other instrument. E. Generally, I liked all the pieces included in the concert. However, I recollected some of them after the concert considering the best ones. For instance, Ruhe, meine seele by Strauss was very sad and tender piece. It had some Gothic elements in both lyrics and music. Enigmatic sound combined with the tenor of the singer resulted in high quality performance which was difficult to dislike. The melody was polyphonic and well-structured. It was notable that songs utilized the concepts of unity and diversity well. All of them, including Ruhe, meine seele included amplitudes in loudness and intensity, change in voice color and deviation in tempo. At the point of culmination the voice was louder than generally in the song. This particular piece is appropriate to represent German culture and its moods. Toujours was a very emotional piece. It was fast and very passionate in its performance. The vocal party was the best to reveal emotional potential of the singer as an actor. Loudness and intensity of this piece made it different from the rest of the program. Moreover, it was surrounded by calmer pieces which created a good background for perception of this piece. Even though it is shorter than other pieces, it exemplifies the mastery of the singer and the pianist at the same time. It was one of the best chances for Sun Ha Yoon because accompaniment was very complicated. Fast arpeggios perfectly fitted the voice of Pati; the piece was brilliant because it was well developed and impressive. The lyrics of the song also deserved attention because was the same emotional as the melody. Most pieces included in the concert were pastoral, romantic and idealistic in their content. This song was different and I liked this contrast. French and German pieces could be compared to Italian music, which was sweet and emotional. Italian music and language matched personality of voice of Pati; perhaps, it was the reason why the concert included more Italian songs compared to other countries. Nice and calm A Vucchella reminded of summer days somewhere in Italy where rape grapes and smiling people enjoy their time. The accompaniment of this song contained nice ornamentation. Italian music had its specific charm. It was dramatically different from national features of German and French composers. A Vucchella performed by Pati was even better due to his personality. He kept all people engaged and relaxed by his voice mediating its power. The lyrics of the piece corresponded to the melody. The translation of the title was A Sweet Mouth and it traced the story about a man in love who asked his beloved to give him a kiss. Light and pure sound and of this piece produces a very positive impression on me. F. It was one of the best classical concerts I attended in my life. I expected it to be totally different and more official, but Pene Pati made classical singing attractive for young people. Diversity of languages, pieces and styles was impressive. People applauded as loud as they could to express their appreciation of the music performed on the stage. It was especially true when Pati performed folk songs. He introduced them and elaborated about their meaning in light and comic manner which was not typical for classical settings. People laughed and enjoyed rare languages in “classical” arrangement. The concert exhibited different styles of music to meet even the most extravagant tastes. Not all singers can boast about the same ability to sing using different languages and sound authentic. Accompaniment was great; I could imagine how difficult it was to play together with a person who had such a big voice. However, the pianist was very professional, emotional and smiling. That pleasant atmosphere only increased positive impression about the concert and all the pieces included in it. I was glad about the choice of the concert, and I honestly enjoyed time spent there.
