Concert Report A. The concert was performed by young tenor Pene Pati who had already won many awards due to unique qualities of his voice. He was accompanied by Sun Ha Yoon who played the piano. B. The concert included diverse pieces which were carefully selected to reveal the power of Pati’s voice. Après un reve by Gabriel Faure and Oh guand je dors by Franz Liszt opened the concert. Go lovely rose, Take, O take those lips away and O mistress mine by Roger Quilter followed them. Gabriel Faure’s Rencontre, Toujours and Adieu were the nest 3 pieces in the program. Ruhe, meine seele, Ach weh mir ungluckhaftem man and Heimliche Aufforderung by Richard Strauss represented the next section of the concert. They were followed by Tosti’s A Vucchella, Non T’amo Piu, Ideale, L’alba Separa Dalla Luce L’ombra and Marechiare. Pablo Sarozabal’s No Puerde Ser was the final piece in the concert. A couple of songs in native Samoa and Maori were represented during the concert as well. C. Generally, I was attentive listener during the concert. The performance was very engaging and I liked the timbre of the voice of the soloist. It was the first time I had an opportunity to listen to all pieces included in the concert, but I was encouraged to listen to them once again. Unfortunately, Pene Pati does not post his performances online, but he has his YouTube channel. This fact gave me an opportunity to enjoy more of his performances a couple of days after the concert in order to refresh my memory about the quality of his voice. D. The soloist had tenor voice which was easy to notice during the performance. Higher register notes were better accentuated than the lower register. Most of the selected pieces were written for tenor. The soloist was accompanied by piano. Obviously, the soloist and the pianist worked as a team on the stage. Close to the end of the concert, Pati, accompanied by his guitar, represented a couple of songs which were not listed in the program. E. Out of all pieces represented at the concert I enjoyed No Puerde Ser, Go, Lovely Rose and O Mistress Mine most. These pieces revealed the power of Pene in the best way. No Puerde Ser had fast tempo and was not as lyrical as other pieces included in the concert. It included deviations in tempo which made the piece slower when Pati wanted to dwell on separate notes. The song expressed clear Italian motifs. Even without reading the translation of the text it was obvious that it traced a love story. Pati used vibrato very skillfully; he applied it when necessary and did not exaggerated emotional connotation of the piece. In this piece, Sun Ha Yoon added a lot to the texture of the piece by her emotional and professional accompaniment. Overall, the composition of the piece allowed contrasting passion and calmness. The middle section of the piece was milder in its sounding; however, it was surrounded by passionate passages from both sides. That opposition supported the principle of diversity in music. Go lovely rose was opposite to No Puerde Ser. That was one of the most romantic pieces in the concert and it corresponded to the pleasant voice of the soloist. This piece awoke only pleasant emotions due to the fact that it sounded similarly to Disney music from the old cartoons. The piece was filled with tenderness and softness. It avoided too sharp or insistent sounds making the piece very smooth. The perception of the song was intensified by charismatic performance of the soloist. Even though he did not used many gestures to support emotional context of the song, the color of his voice vividly rendered everything audience needed to feel. It was obvious that O Mistress Mine was written by the same composer as Go, Lovely Rose. It was the same smooth and harmonious. However, it was louder than the previous piece and contained stronger moments for voice. Pati’s voice was very clear and bright. He managed to represents the feeling of love which was not fake. Melodies in both compositions were very clear and simple. Hey contained no elements which were not agreed together. Both pieces were light despite the big voice of Pati. That piece only intensified all pleasant feelings which I felt listening to the previous songs. Pati sang with passion, and he did it in high quality. Sometimes, classical voices can resort to various singing techniques which spoil the clarity of the sound perception. I personally do not like too much vibrato which is valued in classical singing. Pati avoided using any additional voice ornamentation and represented clear sounding for each piece. His timbre had numerous shades in it which revealed in different registers. The loudness of his voice was more than impressive. It was visible in No Puerde Ser due the contrast of the middle section and other ones. Overall, Pati showed that he deserved the critical appraisal which was announced in the concert program. Listening to his voice and watching his performance only proved that he was not only outstanding soloist, but an actor as well. F. I honestly enjoyed the concert. All pieces were selected carefully to keep it interesting and engaging. In many ways, Pene Pati did not meet my expectation concerning his behavior on the stage. He made the audience laugh easily and people listened to him carefully catching every word he said. The program of the concert was quite diverse; however, classical singing was not a usual thing I listened to. I was very happy to hear songs accompanied by the guitar. Moreover, it was amazing how Pati managed to sing in so many languages. It was the first time in my life when I heard someone singing in rare languages. Overall, this concert was more than I expected from classical singing. I was impressed by charisma and mastery of Pati’s performance. His will definitely become great opera celebrity in his future because he has all required qualities to achieve this high status in the world of classical music art. Read More
