September 8, Response Ian Maxwell’s “Sydney Stylee: Hip-Hop Down Under Comin’ Up” The article written by Ian Maxwell entitled “Sydney Stylee: Hip-Hop Down Under Comin’ Up” was actually a very informative form of discourse; but the manner by which the author structured and presented the contents were difficult to comprehend. Written in 11 single spaced formatted pages, one was made to grasp the extensive and comprehensive depth of information that were relayed pertaining to rationalizing and justifying hip-hop as embodied and claimed to belong within the cultural confines of western Sydney.

Not only was the magnanimity of detail overwhelming, the choice of vocabularies tend to exacerbate difficulties in comprehension, as well as exemplifying success in appealing to a general and universal audience. Since hip-hop, as general conceptual dance craze, seem to represent easy manifestation of standardized components such as a rap, a rhythmic beat and pattern (either through the use of vocal skills or electronic medium), and some breakdancing; one agrees that the cultural assimilation could be a natural occurrence due to the content of the rap or message, which is acclimatized according to the enthusiasts.

As emphasized, “the claim to a down-under hip-hop authenticity… is specifically grounded in the meaningfulness attributed to particular relationships of bodies to place” (Maxwell 263). Therefore, all the author was asserting was despite knowing the true origins of hip-hop, any culture, race, music enthusiasts of different ages, could actually affirm that hip-hop is indeed, “our thing” (Maxwell 277), since the personal expression and soulful rendition of its components have been imbibed and personalized to embrace and claim its music as a cultural way of life.
