As explained by the negotiation experts, “Although Fisher and Ury drew from various disciplines in their 1981 book "Getting to Yes" (including NLP), many Mediation Practitioners and Academics have subsequently contributed in answering the challenging question: How can we best achieve Principled Negotiation in many different contexts?” (The Negotiation Experts). As seen in the case study, the main focus has been on the principled negotiation and this has been clearly seen in the various parts of the articles.
The case study in focus here is one which involves among Catholic sisters, administrators, bishops, physicians, and the Vatican for more than seven years at a hospital in Austin, Texas. The main issue that has been noted in the case is the issue of the women’s health care against the health care organisation. The case is one where the organisations need to keep the option for abortions open for the patients, however a group of catholic sisters protested against this and the “article explores how activists from Seton and Brackenridge hospitals managed a controversy that ensued over the provision of reproductive services as a result of their partnership.
The conflict of views and values involved all the aspects of the national debate, including the Vaticans direct involvement, intense deliberation over the provision of emergency contraception, and compromising attempts at solutions” (Wall). As seen in the case, the principled negotiation has proved to be most effective as the issue in hand is one which is very sensitive and involves a number of high profile aspects like the catholic sisters and the stringent views on the acceptance of abortion in society.
