The former communist state was basically an atheist society which suppressed all religions for more than half a century. Some countries such as Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan have again emerged as Muslim countries after independence from the former Soviet Union. Muslims have made great contributions in the fields of art, architecture and science and have established themselves well in many European countries including Britain where they have a significant presence.

Muslims control a lot of business activities and their unique social structure has integrated itself well within the British society. Britain is conscious of the significance of Islam and allows it to thrive within its precincts along with many other religions. The fraction of the British population which owes allegiance to the Muslim religion is however slight (2.8%; 1.6 million) of the population.
