Considering the worsening economic situation nowadays, our respective families are struggling to cope with expenses, and the policy on residency just does not allow us to have cheaper options. Another better and more economical option available for some of us is to live with relatives or friends who reside near the campus. Doing so not only provides us the comfort of familiar people and surroundings, but also gives us the freedom and privacy we need. It also allows us to prepare what we want to eat, the way we want them, not to mention the fact that big cost on food is saved. While we appreciate the good intention of developing in us the capability of adjusting to other people and living in harmony with them, it is totally different to have to tolerate other people’s invasion of our privacy.
Sharing bedrooms and bathrooms with people we barely know causes us stress, anxiety, and some even have sleepless nights having to put up with others’ disturbing idiosyncracies. Private time is just difficult to have, much less a good rest after a full day in school. Privacy is not simply being able to sleep on our own designated beds or having our individual lockers, among others. It is more than this. It is being able to rest undisturbed by other people coming and going out of the room; it is being able to leave one’s bed and other personal things without being anxious that somebody else might be using or tinkering with them without permission; it is being able to do things freely without others scorning or judging.
