It became a stereotype that Chinese are rich and hardworking while native Indonesians who are less prosperous than the Chinese are considered unreliable. For so many years, native Indonesians have been holding a kind of grudge towards the Chinese due to the economic and social discrepancy between two races. Technically, it can be said that it was a case of a “slow-burn” with the native Indonesians thinking that the wealth enjoyed by the Chinese is rightfully theirs. Native Indonesians felt they were cheated in their own land.

In the minds of most Native Indonesians, they could not understand why Chinese rule our country and displace natives from the social and economic ladder. Having immigrants and non-natives rule your own country is a very painful experience for most native Indonesians. Never mind that these Chinese have been in Indonesia for ages and have adopted the culture. To the eyes of a native, they are still foreigners. There is a huge gap between the rich and the poor in Indonesia, which is often time translated into racial disparity.

Such division of natives and non-natives is even more amplifies by the fact that most Chinese are rich. Social discrepancy is also very prominent in the fact that Chinese can afford to dine in fine restaurants while most Native Indonesians can only enter these places to wait on tables and work in the kitchen. All through the years native Indonesians would watch the rich ride in expensive cars and spend their money so lavishly while the natives break their backs to eke out a living. In the workplaces, the Chinese are of the course boss while the Native Indonesians are the employees.
