The chosen article for this assignment is “The efficacy of a self-management programme for people with diabetes, after a special training programme for healthcare workers in Taiwan: a quasi-experimental design” written by Wu, Liang, Liang, Lee, Yu & Kao. (2014). The article is based on a study that focused on establishing the efficacy of self-management programmes in the improvement of disease management for the people ailing from type 2 diabetes. Trained health workers administered the study and the results showed that for improvement of diabetic care, healthcare providers needed to be better trained to improve their confidence and expertise while treating patients, mentally and physically.

The researchers used the Quasi-experimental design where the health workers selected a target group within which a variable was tested, but a random selection process was not carried out previously. In this survey, they got participants from ten outpatient clinics in Taiwan. Previously, in 2010, 228 participants were recruited from two medical clinics, five-county hospitals and three district hospitals for the purposive sample. These participants were put on a ‘diabetes self-management programme’ that involved reading a handbook on diabetes self-care, watching other patient videos, participation in self-efficacy consultation courses and lastly, telephone follow up.

Post-test diabetes outcome was carried out on the experimental group to test the outcome variables.  Conclusively, a scheduled implementation of ‘diabetes self-management programme’ carried out by health workers who are trained can improve the self-treatment of the diabetes patients.
