Introduction Cans are packaging materials that are widely used in the world for packaging of food and beverages. Due to extensive used of cans there was a need of a machine that could recycle cans so that it can reduce production cost and help to reduce pollution. Can crusher was a machine that was invented in the year 1937 by Jesse M. Wright. Can crusher helps to crush used cans so that it can become useful and used cans could be recycled. A can crusher consists of a hard surface against which pressure can be applied. It also consists of a lever or hydraulics so that the crushing mechanism extends into the fixed hard surface that makes the device work. This essay discusses about the uses, design and feature of different can crushers available. Thesis Statement “Use of can crushers help food and beverage or other organizations to crush the cans for several peruses, such as easy to recycle, reducing business operation cost, saving space and maintain environmental sustainability”. Discussion The main use of a can crusher is to recycle used cans in a proper way so that there can be less pollution and expenses of manufacture of cans can be lowered. A can crusher is a simple device that is used for crushing of cans (Wisegeek 1). It is used widely because it saves time and helps in lowering costs that are required for production of fresh cans available in market. Industries prefer large hydraulic can crushers because it can easily crush many cans in a short period of time which in turn can be melted so that there could be large production of fresh cans with lesser purchase of raw materials. The time saving feature is the most important fact and because of this feature its use in the industries is up to an optimum level. Moreover for industrial purposes the can crushers that are appreciated should consist less space. Now a days there are many crushers available in the market that are technologically advanced and they work efficiently with minimum space possible. Most of the can crushers used in the modern world are self-loading (Stewart 699). These crushers consists of a basket which are placed at the top of the crusher, it also consists of a lever that is pulled so that the device can start crushing the cans. There is also a stopper placed at the bottom of the basket which allows cans to drop automatically up to a certain level that the device can intake for working. For lowering down the friction that is caused by the device lubricant is used so that the shape of the cans can be changed properly. The first crusher was invented and built by Jesse Wright which was a simple device compared to the devices that are used in the industries in the modern world. The device built by Wright consisted of a simple lever which was operated manually and atmospheric pressure was the source. The can crusher built during the year 1937 was a simple one but it had a huge efficiency and was well appreciated by people (Ryan 23). Can Crushers in the modern are mainly of two types, such as laminated crusher and impact crusher. A laminated can crusher is a type of crusher that is mainly constitutes a gear train that is made up of pine wood covering scraps laminated by screws together and it is powered by electric motor. This device does not consist of any metal gears. Because of absence of metal gears this machine is not as strong as the crushers made up of metal gear because can-not take much load. However it is an extremely dangerous machine as it has reported many accidents. The name of this crusher is because of its make that constitutes plywood scraps laminated by screws which make the device stronger and possible to crush items. On the other hand, an impact crusher mainly works in the concept of a hydraulic can crusher. An impact crusher is more strong and stable compared to laminated crusher (Dimarogonas 102). An impact crusher consists of stainless tube that comes in a rectangular shape. This kind of tube is induced because it can take care of the fluids that is required to inject the amount of pressure required for the device to crush cans that can be further used to recycle (Compactorsinc 1). There are holes drilled in the rectangular tubes, after that it is welded to form a rectangular frame. Moreover the top part of the frame is also welded so that the tubes can jack support in the steel plate. After the procedure is complete the jack is hung in support with the hook on the coil. This coil helps the device to move the rectangular plate move in a to and fro motion that is required to crash a can. The impact crusher is also known as the hydraulic crusher because of the fluids that insert pressure instead of air like laminated crusher. Hydraulic crushers are mainly used to crush hard and heavy substances. This type of crusher can be helpful for crushing of any kind of can. Though there are many designs of can crushers available in the market today however the main feature lies between the two types of crushers that have been mentioned. There are certain modern can crushers that are used by industrial belts and they are highly advanced in terms of technology. To design the best can crusher there are certain factors that is required to implement. First of all a can crusher should not be much complex in its working procedure as well as its operating procedure (Hassard 181). It should be designed in such a way that it can be easily operated by people working on it. The second factor is very important. A crusher should be able to crush different type of cans including aluminum and steel. The reason for this factor is that can crushers are generally bought by such farms who only deal with the scraps, hence all kind of scraps are necessary because different industries need different type of scraps. In order to supply in a proper way and meet the demand of industries can crushers should be able to crush different type of metals without any problem. This feature can save a lot of time and money (Pohl 15). Another important factor is the size of a can crusher. Now-a-days, industries prefer mechanisms that are easily operated and take less space so there can be more rooms for other items. In order to fulfill this kind of need there have been many high technological can crushers built so that it can operate in less space provided without any hazard. Hence the best design of a can crusher should also include this factor. In the modern world, use of can crushers has also increased because can crushers are directly proportional to human needs (Lowe 75). Hence there are many competitors available in the market regarding selling of can crushers. Conclusion As observed from the above discussion in the modern world there are many kind of can crushers available. Because of availability of many crushers there is a competition in the market regarding pricing and product. There are huge ranges of products available with difference in pricing. Students have also developed many can crushers against different projects assigned to them. The mechanisms built by students may not be very powerful in terms of crushing cans but the mechanisms built by students consist of time and energy saving features. This is a very positive step taken by people because the crushing of old cans and recycling of new is cans is completely an eco-friendly step that has been taken. Because of this step by human beings there is less wastage of raw materials and world looks in a better position with less soil pollution. Works Cited Lowe, James. Ethics in Engineering Design.
