Visionary leadership has a direct impact on the psychological well-being of nursing home residents. Visionary leadership style demands the directors be assertive and persistent while dealing with nursing home employees. Visionary leadership insists on the performance and implementation of action plans. This entails having quality performance development discussions (O'Reilly & Caldwell, 2010). The director of nursing and social services must have a clear image of the developments that affect nursing home residents positively.

Directors of nursing and social services must demonstrate professional development and delegation of assignments. For nursing home residents to get maximum psychosocial services, employees must be empowered to work independently (Weberg, 2010). Leadership must train employees and attendants on how to develop confidence and expertise while offering psychosocial nursing services. Common instructions are vital in coaching naive nurses (Kenmore, 2008). Coaching junior nurses and attendants in nursing homes is a reflection of leadership (Kuokkanen & Leino-Kilpi, 2001). The director of nursing must inspire and coach other workers through excellent coordination and restructuring of work units (Laschinger & Wilk, 2009). Coaching enables nurses to work independently within their bounds. Nursing homes demand motivated and passionate experts.

The commanding leadership style is characterized by control and compliance. This style of leadership is vital in nursing homes because it motivates nurses to operate with clear guidelines and directions. This enhances the delivery of resources to the residents in the nursing homes (Kenmore, 2008). Employees are expected to obey orders (Reynolds & Rogers, 2003). This leadership style demands that the director of nursing enquire about the opinions of nursing home attendants. The style is perceived to be authoritarian, inflexible and extremely hierarchical (Morjikian & Kimball, 2007). The style is vital although it is being considered to be outdated. To the inexperienced workers, the style is extremely convenient. Directors of nursing are viewed as controlling when they use this style.

The leadership styles of the director of nursing and social services affect employees’ jobs and satisfaction. This has an impact on the quality of services delivered in a nursing home (Rosengren & Athlin, 2007). Nurse Manager’s trust promotes participation and motivation among employees in the nursing homes. The leadership styles help in solving conflicts and sharing resources. The fluency of operations in a nursing home and efficiency are a product of leadership style. The director of nursing and social services should give hope to the residents of the nursing homes through active leadership and training (McQueen, 2004). This gives employees a chance to participate in development (Reynolds & Rogers, 2003). The director of nursing must share responsibilities and make sure they are carried out professionally. The leadership style can hinder or enhance the delivery of quality services in nursing homes. The relationship between residents and nurses affects the psychosocial well-being of nursing home residents directly (Reynolds & Rogers, 2003). The leadership skills of the director of nursing affect the relationship within and between working units. Cooperation between working units promotes continuity of patient care. Supervisors and nurses experience the challenges of an organizational culture. Organizational conflicts and employee attitudes are reflected in patient care. The leadership styles should be applied with sensitivity and expertise (Kuokkanen & Leino-Kilpi, 2001). This promotes the goals and mission of the nursing homes. The director responds to patient mistreatment and disciplinary cases (Casida & Parker, 2004). Organizational culture, commitment and cooperation affect the success of patient care. Leadership styles affect patient satisfaction and quality nursing care services. The leadership style of the director of nursing and social services is directly proportional to the psychosocial well-being of nursing home residents.
