Flextracks, which is a carbon footprint response, refers to the area of investment, where Emirates Airlines has shifted to effective planning systems for flights – designed to carefully optimize routes and plan flights. They did this through cooperative work with Airservices Australia (ASA) in pushing for the adoption of flexible air routes – which are custom for prevailing weather – to save time, reduce emission levels, and save fuels – on a continual basis. The airline saves an average of 25 minutes flight time and 8,000 kg of fuel per flight (Emirates. 2012). Flextracks is the concept of using the high altitude jet-stream currents, which are known to dramatically alter a plane’s fuel consumption and speed levels, while on long distance trips.

The flextracks diverge from direct or fixed routes, so as to avoid the impact of strong headwinds and use the strength of the currents to the advantage of the plane. The best use of this response is affected by the Airservices National Operations Center (ANOC), which computes, then publishes valid flextrack information. This information is used by the airline operators, flying in and out of the Australian airspace, so as to offer them an opportunity to take advantage of the existing currents, winds and weather patterns.

These lines are operational between Asia, the Middle East and Australia (Airservices 2011). These systems have made it possible for the practices of changing aircraft routes, including non-stop flights between the U.S and India, overflying Norway and Finland in a day, then Portugal and North Africa the next day – depending on the prevailing weather and jet-streams. The development of these routes has led to increasing harmonization to navigation, communication, data systems and ground to ground contacts (Airservices 2005).

The new flight response uses the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) , which offers extreme accuracy, integrity and all-weather global
