The vendors who can align and adjust their software and products as per the needs of large cloud computing service providers would stand to benefit to a large degree. Multinational IT organizations like IBM, Dell (DELL), and Hewlett-Packard a few to name, are steadily advancing in that direction. IBM had declared on the 1st of August that it would spend $ 360 million to build a cloud computing data center in Research Triangle Park, N. C., bringing to a count of 9 its total of cloud computing centers. Another multinational IT major, Dell is also targeting the cloud computing market. Dell supplies hardware products and components to some of the largest cloud computing providers world-wide and Web 2.0 companies, like Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, and Yahoo. (King 2008) "We created a whole new business just to build custom products for those customers," Dell CEO Michael Dell says. (King 2008). MNC CEOs and partnering Cloud Computing Service providers agree that the multimillion dollar business is literally bursting at the seams and will soon enter in to the multibillion dollar bracket. The cloud computing business is literally on the surge and at the moment there seems to be no hurdles in reaching that goal. Microsoft, one of the customers for Dell’s hardware manufacturing business has made cloud computing mandatory in fiscal 2009. It lets consumers choose whether they want a traditional software or software as a service or a combination of both. Microsoft’s cloud computing venture has sky rocketed almost simultaneously with the global Cloud computing boom. Microsoft CEO Ballmer has announced that employees would hear more of Microsoft’s cloud computing based application and web interfaces. Different end subscribers like for instance Goldman Sachs responded with a desire to use more of Microsoft’s cloud computing applications. The Advantages of Cloud Computing: Cloud computing has several advantages as compared to traditional internet application in the standard way of accessing software and hardware resources that require the local physical presence of both the hardware and software. Virtualization: Cloud computing implements the concept of virtualization more precisely sever virtualization. The Disadvantages of cloud Computing: Reliability and Security of Data: Many CEOs and senior executives in charge of technology growth platforms of various companies are concerned about the reliability and security of services offered by the cloud technology. As cloud is the latest technology it cannot change older technology to fit within its framework. Rather the cloud technology has to work around to include diverse platforms, technologies and systems. Dependency on Provider: The advantage of Cloud Computing technology that is decentralized can also be one of its key disadvantages. The end user has no control over the software and is heavily dependent on the provider for updates, upgrades and downtime. In rare cases the end user might be at the mercy of the provider to keep the service up and running in the face of a technical challenge or crisis. (White 2012) If there are any problems in the system the action needs to be taken by the provider and user would have no control or clue on fixing the problem from his end. Any sort of bug fixing, troubleshooting would then need to be done by the service provider. If a critical application had been running out of the cloud service then it could result in huge losses and complete shutdown of business. As an example, if a payroll solution is running out of a cloud framework and on the payroll processing day the software throws a bug or has a glitch, it would lead to business disruptions. (White 2012) Privacy and Confidentiality: Data Privacy issues are one of them most common of issues faced by clients and service providers across the globe. In cloud computing technology, the data is hosted on third party service providers. As a result the safe and secure storage of data is a responsibility that lies with the service provider and the consumer has no control whatsoever on it. A security breach in the third party security system might lead to terrible losses and even lead to huge legal issues. (Borja 2012) Reluctance to provide service: Most small and medium businesses may be target of this disadvantage of cloud computing. In some cases it may happen that the cloud computing service provider may turn down the request to provide services to an organization. These companies do not have adequate legal machinery to drive a case to its solution or to take action against a nonperforming service provider. Conclusion: Taking into consideration the benefits and disadvantages of cloud computing we can clearly understand that it is a matter of proper policies and procedures that need to be clearly discussed, understood, agreed to and implemented by all parties engaging in providing or receiving services. The benefits are far too many to deter the growth and popularity of cloud computing technology. With proper guidelines and IT rules enforced the power and potential of cloud computing can be harnessed and used to the benefit in many public and private sector enterprises.
