Research Strategies
The success of any library research depends, partly, on the strategy one uses to find information. Since library resources are usually organized by subject categories, the words used for searching are important, mainly in the case of computerized search tools that have keyword search functionality (Joan, 2005). The question analysis procedure uses five steps in developing search vocabulary. The five steps are as follows:
1. Definition of the topic. Reflect on the topic, and note what one wants to know concerning the subject.
2. Identification of the main concepts in the topic. Examining the topic statement to classify the major concepts. Words that are not essential to the significance of the search should be omitted.
3. Finding Synonyms for the main concepts. This step important since the tools used in locating the information are published by different publishing companies and different companies may use dissimilar words for the same concept.
4. Devise ways to narrow the main concepts. If excessive information is published on the topic, one should devise ways of limiting the scope of the search.
5. Devise ways of broadening the main concepts. If the quantity of published information on the topic is inadequate, one ought to devise ways of broadening the topic in order to retrieve the required resources.
