Mentoring and communication/ listening A mentor is a person who guides and helps another throughout their individual development. Mentors are usually older experienced persons who take the mentee under their care and nurture them in their professional or career quests. The need for mentorship is necessitated by the fact that learning, working or living environment is always rough, troublesome and challenging (Ossai-Ugbah 49). Good mentors relay optimism to their mentees. They communicate their trust that the mentees will overcome the prevailing tribulations and achieve their desired targets.

In the movie “Lion King”, Timon and Pumba entrench a sense of optimism into Simba with their motto “hakuna matata”. Mentors will go out of their way to support the mentees irrespective of the magnitude of the challenge ahead. Timon and Pumba pledge to fight alongside Simba in his war to reclaim the kingdom (Ossai-Ugbah 54). Mentors are a factor to success and as such, they should equally be successful. In the process of guiding someone a lot of qualities are normally transferred from the mentor to the mentee.

The mentor should have traits of success in order to relay them to the mentee. It is from Mufasa’s success as a king that Simba gets insight on how to lead the kingdom into prosperity (Ossai-Ugbah 55). In light of the movie “lion king”, it is imperative that a mentor should have positive attitude, willingness to share and above all take a personal interest in the protégés progress. On the other side the mentee ought to demonstrate willingness to learn, should ask questions and remain focused at all times.

While a mentor is supposed to be a good communicator, a mentee should be a good listener. Works Cited Ossai-Ugbah, Chika Diokpala. Survival in a Hostile Environment: What to Do When Your Boss/Colleague Want. Indiana: Westbow, 2011. Print
