Flying may seem difficult but with support, with all hands on deck, and with the elimination of stigma of any kind against the mentally retarded, their hope of getting well can be achieved.I selected this picture and theme also to portray the idea that the need to promote the welfare of the mentally retarded is a responsibility that should be seen as a collective one. Mental patient welfare should be the concern of all people for one major reason and that is; we all are at risk of becoming mentally retarded.

The task of defending the mentally retarded must be promoted and championed for one major reason and that is, the mentally retarded is incapable of defending him or herself. Because of this, civil society and the mentally able should never relent on their responsibility of ensuring that it is always well with the mentally retarded. This responsibility must also not be performed on a one-off basis but must be continued and promoted from time to time. The link of my picture to paramedical practice is that the causes of mental retardation are so much and varying that, one cannot predict how he or she be affected (Kaneshiro, 2011).

Because of this, there has been a situation whereby the response to mental health concerns among mentally able people is mixed. The good news however is that paramedics continue to show great concern for the wellbeing and welfare of the mentally retarded in society. For instance, there have constantly been new drugs discovered to help the mentally retarded recover quickly. New ways of mental healthcare are also practiced by health practitioners, especially psychiatrists and nurses. Since the Declaration on the Rights of Mentally Retarded Persons, which was Proclaimed by General Assembly resolution 2856 (XXVI) of 20 December 1971, there have been health researches that are undertaken by health experts to ensure that new medications, vaccines, healthcare approaches, and surgery processes are discovered.

One typical success by health experts is psychosurgery. As Making the Modern World (2004) explains, “Psychosurgery is a treatment of last resort, used only in extreme cases when other treatment methods have failed and where, because of the disorder, the person is likely to cause harm to themselves or others.”It will continue to be my utmost dream that society continues to support the mentally retarded to help them gain good health so that they can all be like us. I will like to end my reflection by taking a reflection and advice from Psychosurgery (2009), which states thatWe must embrace community living programs, group homes, and other compassionate methods of dealing with the vulnerable people in our society.

Treating them as criminals, subjecting them to “mental health courts”, and forcing them to take medication that may not really do them any good, is an outdated model that should be unworthy of an enlightened society like ours.We must all indeed come on board to show love to the dream and hope of the mentally retarded.
