Winning the War Foreword: The research paper analyzes the article on social issues by Bob Herbert. Thesis: The main idea of the article “Winning the Class War” by Bob Herbert is that it cannot be so any longer that the gap between classes is so deep The main idea of the article “Winning the Class War” written by Bob Herbert is that it cannot be so any longer that the gap between classes is so deep. I believe, that the author belongs to the middle class but not to the elite, because the reasons he sets seem to be honest and sincere.

The author identifies the problem of the USA economy and society and proposes the solution of it. “Recessions are for the little people, not for the corporate chiefs and the titans of Wall Street who are at the heart of the American aristocracy. (Herbert, 2010 p.1 )” . I completely agree with this statement since the rich have enough money to survive any crises, in other words their money deposit and storage allows them to do this. But those people who depend greatly on their monthly salaries and wages lose everything with their jobs.

They have no big deposits as well as no securities capital and that is why crisis struck the poor first of all. But the author focuses not on the poor but rather on the middle class since it is the main constituent of the successful economy. It is no way a secret that the world crisis started from the USA, where “the fat cats” (Herbert ) as the author calls them didn’t manage to cope with the mortgage sphere. Let’s remember the flourishing USA: a happy middle class with a quite high annual income that can afford having a house, a car, and several children and to be in easy circumstances.

With the great rate of unemployment people have no money even for food, to say nothing of a car, and rent. As time approaches to Christmas the situation becomes even more unjust and obvious. “Even as millions of out-of-work and otherwise struggling Americans are tightening their belts for the holidays, the nations elite are lacing up their dancing shoes and partying like royalty as the millions and billions keep rolling in”. (Herbert, 2010 p.1 ). By saying this the author wanted to show that the middle class has to refuse something in order to cherish the tradition of gifts giving, while the rich of the country even are not ashamed of throwing parties and pretending to be more modest.

The most offensive thing is that those in power and with money just ask the nation to stand the tough times. “So here we have the billionaire and the millionaire telling the poor and the struggling - the little people - that they will just have to make do with less.” (Herbert, 2010 p.1). It would be funny, if it wasn’t the real life. The nation can do without some things but it cannot do without the confidence in tomorrow. Those unemployed have to refuse everything, because they don’t have money at all but they also have families and children to rise.

The things that are happening nowadays in the USA just signify that this country is not any longer the country of freedom, democracy and equal opportunities. People are discriminated not only on the race, sex, and religion but also on class. And it is awful because it decreases the morale and ethics of the society. As a result we can observe the increasing level of crime and low morale in the society. Surely, people have to eat and buy clothes, and the easiest way to have it is mugging and robbery.

The thing is that rich people have too high fences and expensive alarm systems to be burgled, they have too many bodyguards to be mugged and they have too little conscience to help those in need. The example the author of the article sets concerns the system of education and its newly-assigned head that has no experience and education in the sphere she is going to rule. This situation is very embarrassing especially for students who are supposed to be more educated than their head. It proves that the principle dominating the USA society is bail and friends who are given the best posts and jobs.

The way out that Bob Herbert suggests is creating some organizations that will fight for the rights of the poor. But the thing is that this fight will soon result in armed conflicts and even civil war. That is why it is necessary to change the authorities that can be done only through the direct elections.
