Career and Life Experience Career and Life Experience What have you done to prepare for admission and a career in pharmacy? In order to excel in any profession, commitment to work and dedication are the foremost qualities required. I have always been a hard worker and have put in my best efforts to achieve what I aim for. I have aspired to be a pharmacist and have worked hard to prepare for a career in pharmacy. I have done my BS in nursing. I believe that this forms a very strong foundation for me to base my pharmacy career upon.

Nursing has taught me not only the importance of compassion and respect for others that is mandatory in every healthcare profession but has also exposed me to a various aspects of pharmacy. I have worked in a hospital setting and have seen how important a part drugs play in relieving the ailment of the ill. Moreover, as a nurse, I have dealt with drugs and medicines extensively, advising patients on the administration of these drugs in fixed quantities. Also, I have come to know the names of an assortment of medicines and what other brand names they come in.

Dealing with medication has also piqued my interest in the chemistry behind their effects; in particular, why certain brands are more effective than others. I believe that my career as a pharmacist will also be boasted by my experience in treating patients because I now understand the psychology of the patients. This would help me greatly when dealing with my clients, as I can use both my knowledge in pharmacy and my experiences as a nurse to help them. 2. What unique personal qualities and/or life experiences will you bring to your pharmacy career?

One of the most important personal qualities that can aid me in my career as a pharmacist is my compassion for others. During my nursing education, I often found myself empathizing sincerely with the patients and understanding their pain and suffering. Bearing this in mind, my focus when preparing drugs would be solely to mitigate the pain and affliction of these people. This will also prevent me from digressing from my purpose. Moreover dealing with patients has made me aware of the healthcare issues that are rampant in the society.

I can use this experience in making more effective medicines for treating the common problems. This also helps me prepare for the majority of the clientele that I will be getting and what medicines will be in high demand. As a result, I intend to study the common health problems of the society in greater detail. Since I have been exposed to medicines and drugs, I already know the names of the different companies that make drugs as well as the generic names of the drugs. Having a basic knowledge of the main constituents of the drugs, like paracetamol falls under the category of acetaminophen and caffeine, will give me an edge over my peers who do not have a background in nursing (“Acetaminophen”, 2010).

Interacting with patients has also given me greater insight into the mechanism of how an illness develops and progresses. With this knowledge, I can experiment which drugs are more effective at what stage of the disease. Thus I believe that my personal attributes and life experiences will assist me significantly in my pharmacy career. Reference ListAcetaminophen (2010).
