Beginning college at any age and in any circumstances is exciting. The thoughts and dreams of participating in challenging academic discussions and meeting new and interesting people are major components of the University experience. Everyone can appreciate the benefits that come from attending a great university. But starting college as a non-traditional student that has recently been through a divorce is an especially important step in my life. I would never recommend going through a divorce as a means of gaining maturity or learning how to deal with disappointment and sadness.

But the reality is, I have matured as a result of this recent experience and feel more focused and prepared than ever to enter college. Any honest person that has been through a divorce will tell you that they learned a lot about themselves as a result of the divorce proceedings. I am no exception to this. Being more self aware is the greatest blessing I have received from this upsetting experience. That self-awareness is sure to be an asset to me as I enter college. The benefit of having a bit of hindsight is that looking back on life experiences can help you to focus on what you want to become.

Attending a good university is one further step in this process of self-discovery that began with my divorce. The road ahead is uncertain, because attending college will be completely foreign to me, but I can see how a better education will help me accomplish the goals and dreams I have placed before me. I am excited and determined as I begin this new phase of my life.
