However, in the recent times this code of ethics and beliefs has been bypassed so many times in so many nations by such a large number of political parties that a new phrase had to be developed; catch-all political parties. However, it was believed that the catch-all party’s principles posed risks against democracy.1 In today’s day and age, almost all political parties fall in this category. What has caused this profound change in the working of the political lots, this is analyzed below.
Historically political parties have generally shown strict adherence to their code of ethics and beliefs, henceforth referred to as Ideology. The political histories of some of the world’s greatest democracies such as the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia are replete with struggles in the name of political ideologies which would make the modern political actors seem novice. Take for instance the battle fought for slavery on America’s political grounds, in the decade prior to the US Civil war (1861-65). There was nothing greater in the minds of the northern republican politicians than the goal of abolition, while the southern democrats were willing to pay any price to defend their right to retaining slavery, as they had (mis)believed was embodied in their glorious constitution. The will to struggle for an ideology was strong enough for them to risk losing half their country. Despite all this, it was the ideology of ‘equal human rights’, so much propounded by the northern republicans that finally emerged victorious.
It has been more than one and a half century since those events have passed and a lot has changed since then. Especially a great change has been witnessed in the character of the political parties. There may be shortcomings; yet its advocates believe that they are of little significance and do not pose a threat to the stability enjoyed by the country today. Thomas Magstadt asserts that continuity is ensured by the system itself, “as the two major parties keep to the middle of the road to appeal to a broad range of middle-class interests,”3 hence the preservation of political and governmental stability.
Despite some economic ups and downs, the country is one of the most stable Eastern European democracies to emerge from the breakup of the former Soviet Union (cia.gov). Typical of parliamentary democracies, the Czech Republic has multiple political parties that vie for seats in its bicameral legislature.
A national political party that desires to gain power must have a certain propensity to tend to the most fundamental values of it's citizens while representing the entire population as best as possible. Since humans hold diverse and convoluted ideological thoughts, and political parties represent citizens, then it can be concluded with some certainty that there should also be numerous distinguishable political parties representing these intricate ideologies.
It was a short-lived political party which evolved in the 1840s as a reaction to the mounting split between pro- and anti-slavery movements in the United States and the party was active in the 1848 and 1852 presidential elections in the U.S. The most essential aim of the Free Soil Party was to resist the spreading out of slavery into the western territories of the U.S.
(Bogdanor, 2006) The Conservative Party in the UK also had 2,800,000 individual members in the early part of 1950. Membership in political parties have however dwindled steadily over the years. By 1975 for example, membership of the Conservative Party had reduced from 2,800,000 to 1,500,000.
