The days are long gone since the good authors wrote their magisterial histories. In the mean time, Martin Jacques has helped fill the gap. In this book Jacques says that the west will no longer be overriding and dominant and the further will take many forms. He claims that in this new era of “contested modernity”, the major players of the century will be China. He argues that the 21st century will observe the rise of increasingly powerful non-Western countries such as China and India. Jacques explains that “I do think that it is very likely, though not inevitable, that China will become the strongest part of the world, but still it will be a long process, for even if China takes over the U.
S in size of economy, it will still be a lot poorer in terms of its population.” He predicts in his book that China will overtake the United States as the world’s largest economy in 2007 and double in size in 2050. The first impression of China when you fly out of the slums of Mumbai and then to Shanghai, nobody would never think that it is also a “developing” country like India and others. The person would think that it is a rich city like “New York” ten times bigger and cleaner. Regarding China there are two main camps in the west.

The second camp may be called “European Camp” which claims that china will fail because their culture, policies and system are inferior to those of the European masters. Now Martin Jacques a reputed journalist who has lived and worked in China, demonstrate that within 15 to 20 years China will overtake the US as the richest country in the world, and less than 40 years it will be an accepted, acknowledged and recognized world power.
Of course predictions are always hard, and
