She poisons Homer, killing him, though keeping his body with her in their house. After Emily herself dies, many years later, it becomes apparent to the townsfolk that Emily had slept beside the dead corpse of Homer until she herself died. Her insanity over her need to be with Homer drove her to murder and a life void of everything except for her beloved.
Miss Dent, in “The Five-Forty-Eight”, becomes insane after being fired by her boss after a one-night stand. She seeks revenge by stalking him on a train, armed with a gun. Even though Blake, Miss Dent’s boss is of a more sound mind than Miss Dent, it is obvious through the story that Miss Dent is more aware and perceptive of her surroundings. Again, feeling the weight of something devastating to her, the main female character falls into a state of insanity and acts out on it. As with Emily in the previous story, Miss Dent acts out in a dangerous way, harming others around her.
The two short stories share the common theme of insanity. The story of each woman is different and unique. In the same way, the ways these women act out on their insanity is also unique to the individual. It is the story of Emily Grierson, depicted as the protagonist and a round character, whose personality traits were examined as the story evolved. The narrator, assumed the point of view of a first-person-plural narrator, using ‘we’ rather than ‘I’ for the rationale that the author wanted to impart the narrator as one of the townsfolk who had been an active participant, as intent observer of Emily’s story.
Yet, the reader is inclined to accept this information as fact revealing Emily as a strange and eccentric character, who was thought to come from old money and was a recluse who never married. She was rumored to have purchased bought arsenic which raised suspicion especially as her only known acquaintance was male maid.
William Faulkner (1897-1962), is a well known American writer, whose writings mostly evolve around life in the South. His story, “A Rose for Emily” is the tale of an old woman, and it reflects a community’s account of the life of one of its oldest citizens, Emily, whose death represents the decay of Jefferson town in which she has lived.
John was often criticized as peerless short story writer but his work especially novels showed the tone of summing up and tension of vision. Cheever’s work shows the complexity of situation and turmoil that lies beneath the characters seemingly soothing aura.
In literary terms, the writer of the paper says that the setting of the story is rich in Faulkner. The setting is in a sinister old house in Mississippi. According to Faulkner, the author created his own Mississippi County, Yoknapatawpha, as the setting for the story that is much of his own fiction.
Extreme situations and experiences are crude realities of human life in the contemporary world, which is growing more complex than ever, and people encounter personal agony within increasingly desperate lives. While William Faulkner, in his "A Rose for Emily," offers an idea of the effect of the complexities of modern life, there is a greater lesson taught by the short story which helps one improve one's life in the modern context.
