Legalizing Marijuana Speech Outline Introduction Legalizing versus criminalizing Marijuana- do the benefits overweigh negatives? 2. Are the beliefs about marijuana crime truths or myths?
3. Is Marijuana use truly criminal? Is it fatal or harmful?
1. Criminalization of Marijuana usage
i. The enormous number of arrests connected with Marijuana use and possession
ii. The impact of arrest on their families
1. The smokers too are humans with family and commitments
2. Growing public support
i. Survey reports show that the truth about Marijuana is being spread widely. For example, “Gallups October Crime poll finds 44% of Americans in favor of making marijuana legal (Saad, Lydia , 2009).
3. Economic issues
i. Arrests and sentencing not only impacts the acquitted but also the government which spends a significant amount of money on the court and prisons. But the significant amount is overwhelmingly high due to the huge number of arrests!
“We spend $68 billion per year on corrections, and one-third of those being corrected are serving time for nonviolent drug crimes. We spend about $150 billion on policing and courts, and 47.5% of all drug arrests are marijuana-related. That is an awful lot of money, most of it nonfederal, that could be spent on better schools or infrastructure — or simply returned to the public” (Klein, Joe, 2009)
4. Economic benefits:
On the other hand, illegal operations give no benefit to the government, but legalization will bring in taxes and help control the operations as well. “It is estimated that pot is the largest cash crop in California, with annual revenues approaching $14 billion. A 10% pot tax would yield $1.4 billion in California alone. A veritable marijuana economic-stimulus package!” (Klein, Joe, 2009; “US Policy on Drugs”, n.d.; Wolff, Madeline, 2009)
5. Is Marijuana truly harmful?
i. Marijuana not medically proven to be cause of death, cancer, bronchitis, etc like alcohol or tobacco
ii. National Institute of Drug Abuse Bureau of Mortality Statistics show that Marijuana related death is nil while 400,000 deaths were caused by tobacco consumption and 100,000 due to alcohol
iii. Medical benefits are many
1. “Cannabis being used as a treatment goes back to China in 28 BC. Emperor Shen-Nung prescribed cannabis for: beriberi, constipation, female weakness, gout, malaria, rheumatism, and absent-mindedness” (“Marijuana Uses - Marijuana as Medicine”, 2009)
2. 2001 report on the medical benefits of Marijuana gives a comprehensive list including “AIDS Wasting Syndrome
3. Arthritis
4. Brain Injury/Stroke
5. Multiple Sclerosis
6. Nausea associated with cancer Chemotherapy
7. Anti-Tumour Effects
8. Asthma
9. Epilepsy
10. Glaucoma
11. Schizophrenia
12. General Pain
13. Migraine
14. Eating Disorders” (“Marijuana Uses - Marijuana as Medicine”, 2009)
1. Benefits outweigh any myths related to Marijuana- Marijuana should be legalized
2. More myths than truths related to criminalizing Marijuana.
3. Users not criminals
4. Personal recreational use
5. Arrest and sentencing causes harm to the families and children
6. Huge economic disadvantage for the country given the enormous number of marijuana-related arrests and the expenses on courts and prisoners
7. Potential economic benefits if marijuana is legalized- in the form of taxes
8. Medically Marijuana not causing serious fatal damage like any other drugs and alcohol
9. More medical benefits and can be availed only if it is legalized and dispensaries opened

...intend to have anything more in your relationship with them. They are casual friends and there is no deep relationship that is planned. You just talk with them and then go on your merry way. You talk with them about common topics like hobbies or classes. But you can not talk with them about yours or their personal life and their personal information. It is more of a casual friendship. There is not a lot of one person totally depending on another person with this friendship. From my experience in life, I think that this is the most common kind of friendship. ...Speech Respected teachers and colleagues, The true enemies of human society, according to my conviction, are people who rarely care about their lives or the life of the people around them and to this group belongs people who always smoke without concern for their surroundings. Smoking has become common things as well as fashion for the people in the contemporary world and the smokers maintain that it can liberate their tension and relax their mind. It is high time to consider how the nonsmoker thinks about it, as he is negatively affected by the practice of ‘passive’ smoking, and people continue to smoke in public places without concern for the people around. The smoke-free laws are based on the rationale that it is...
