Information Processing and Working Memory According to the information processing model, information is obtained from one’s environment. Informationis generally obtained through one of our 5 senses: sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste. Once information is obtained through 1 or more of the 5 senses and encoded within the sensory memory. It is then filtrated through to the working memory. In other words, for information to be encoded within the working memory there must be an external stimulus, which alerts 1 or more of the 5 senses, thus allowing for the information to be manipulated and for the brain to decide to how to process and handle it.
Working memory is defined as the area of the brain which holds information essential for completing a task. Unlike long term memory, which may store information for indefinite periods of time, working memory stores information for very brief periods of time. The information stored in working memory typically lasts for only 2-3 seconds at most, which gives the brain a chance to recognize the information, process it and apply it to the task at hand. Working memory is considered by researchers to be a vital aspect of the memory process.
The capacity for information within the working memory is very limited. Miller (1956) concluded that adults are able to process and repeat back only 7 pieces of information at a time. This phenomenon was labeled Miller’s Magic Number 7. However recent studies dispute Miller’s number and some theorist claim that the capacity of the working memory is limited to even fewer pieces of information. Recent studies also conclude that the capacity of the working memory also depends on the presentation of the information. When information is presented verbally, the amount of information stored generally depends on the length of time it takes for one to speak the information aloud.

Questions for Consideration (7-8)

... Finance and Accounting In my opinion, I support the idea of using one GAAP as compared to the use of different GAAP forsmall companies otherwise known as differential accounting. This is because the accounting requirements of any business are done with respect to the transactions being carried out. These transactions entail exchange of money, loan reimbursements, debits and credits. The solitary difference is the amounts involved. The multinational companies carry out their multi-billion transactions while the small companies transact using much lesser amounts (Alexander and Britton 219). Since there is a similarity in the business operations irrespective of whether it is a small business or a large organization... Finance and Accounting In...

...Receivables Management FACTORS AFFECTING A FIRM’S CREDIT POLICY EXTERNAL The availability of credit or short term finance is a majordeterminant of a firm’s credit policy. In most cases when a firm advances more credit to its customers it faces a need of increased working capital needs (Talekar, 2005).  An increase in credit advanced to customers, means that there will inevitably be a need to raise more short term funds to finance the increased working capital needs. These funds can be obtained through short term borrowings, bank overdrafts, credit purchases or reducing the amount of inventory/stock held. It is possible that the company’s suppliers and short term lenders do not wish to advance more credit. This would mean... Management FACTORS ...
