s 27 July 2009 "Chi-Rho-lota page from the Book of Kells" and "The vision of Hildegard of Bingen" from "Scivias When art is talked about one striking aspect that immediately catches our attention is pictures and these pictures are again subdivided into images and so on so forth. There are mainly two forms of arts namely representational art and non representational art, there is a third category too but it is obscure. This paper will throw light upon Chi-Rho- lota from “The book of Kells” and in addition to this paper will also expansively compare and contrast “The book of Kells” and “The vision of Hildegard of Bingen”.
“The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript of the four Christian gospels. It was made in Ireland, or possibly England, about AD800, by monks belonging to the Columban movement. In the Middle Ages it was kept in the Abbey of Kells in County Meath. It was designed as a treasure, a wonder. An old chronicle called it "the chief relic of the Western world". Modern opinion rates it the finest example of the "insular" (i.e. British Isles) gospel-books.” (The Chi-Rho from The Book of Kells)
The illumination of the Gospel is very conspicuous in this particular book, this sections comprehensively presents four gospels in front of the readers. There are reports that the book was published in either England or Ireland.
Chi and Rho are nothing but two alphabets of the Greek language, these two letters have a very striking resemblance with the world Christ there are reports that suggest that these alphabets were incorporated in order to have a synonymic for the name of Christ. A Historian has rubbished all such claims and he has advised the readers to have a look at the alphabets superficially. The author acknowledges the fact of being stuck by a very bright light when he was 42 years of age. The author uses hyperbole in order to convince the readers of the power and the illumination of that light. Even this predominantly is based on the gospel and so is “The Book of Kells. “But I, although I did see and hear this, nevertheless because of doubt and a bad opinion and the diversity of men’s words refused to write for a long time” (The Vision of Hildegard). To conclude it is very fair to say that both the books talk about illuminating and it is all about discovering the power of god. These are very highly inspiring work of art and a must see for everyone. This work of art can change several lives forever and it is very fascinating. The pictures have deep hidden meaning it is not meant to be concealed but a viewer can only go deep into it once he decides to do so, on the outlook the picture looks just another picture but when seen with concentration it certainly is conspicuous.
