God commanded Moses to see how strong the Canaanites were. So Moses sent spies into the Negev. He wanted to know how many people lived in Canaan. Moses also required that his spies see if “they be strong or weak” (KJV, Numbers 13:18). Moses needed to know what the Israelites would be faced with once crossing into the Canaanites territory. Thus when Moses’ spies went into the Negev, they were instructed to observe every cultural aspect of the people located in that area. Moses did not want to fight with the Canaanites unprepared.

The spies reported: Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover, we saw the children of Anak there. (KJV, Numbers 13:28) Although the Israelites had God on their side, the spies felt that the people of this region were too strong to overcome. Agriculturally, the spies were to see whether the land was “fat or lean” ((KJV, Numbers 13:20). The spies were instructed to bring back grapes to prove if the region was fruitful.

This research was done in order to find the land of milk and honey, which God had promised the Israelites. A rich agricultural region was the basis of the Promised Land. The region sought after by Moses and his followers was the land of milk and honey. Without grass, fruits, vegetables, and other agricultural products there would be no milk and honey. Agricultural research was to see if they were in the right region.
