Im No Body, Who are You?” by Emily Dickinson The poem d “Im No Body, Who are You” is one of the poem which had attracted me the most. The poem is one of the best works of Emily Dickinson, one of the most blessed poets which America has ever witnessed. One of the catchiest factors that attracted me towards the poem is the title itself. When the title reads “Im No Body, Who are You”, it brings in a feeling of inclusiveness. Even with out starting to read the poem, the tile would prompt one to have a self analysis on the trueness of his or hers own life and times.

The lyrics of the poem must be read along the history and the social background which belonged to the author. The self isolating nature of Emily Dickinson has inspired the basic message of the poem (Pettinger, 2006). It is interesting to note that all trough her reclusive life in Amherst, Massachusetts, Emily Dickinson had written almost 1800 poems out which she opted to publish only fewer than ten of them (Sparknotes, 2008) This indicates the approach of the author towards the love for social admiration.

This approach is symbolized right from the ve.ry first line of the poem. When the author asks the readers that are they too “nobody” as the author is, the message underlying is that social privacy would pull one into the trap of dishonest admiration by the world. This fake heaven would never have love, life and compassion. In one fine day the society would pull you down proving you to be at your own. The spiritual background of the writer which always strived for privacy would have prompted these thoughts which seem to be of negative attitude at the primary analysis.

However, the ultimate truth of life proves the author to right. At times of hardships it is often that people finds them selves in solitude. The symbolic message extended by the author is that it is always better to accept this solitude by will than to get betrayed by the company of the society and to be left alone at times of need. The line ‘they will banish us’ as used in the poem clearly expresses the fear that the author has for the societal linkages and publicity. She prefers to be left ‘nobody’.

The term, ‘nobody’ is the strongest one in the poem which stands as a powerful symbol of symbolism. Moreover this word leaves the reader with the freedom of implying the message of the poem in situation of personal nature. When for someone, being “nobody” can be a state of destitute, for some other the same would stand for the state of sacrificing oneself in love. For the second case the inspiration would be nullify personally in love and to love with no expectations which in other terms is ‘true love’.

In totality, the poem is found to successfully carry powerful messages, while on the other side being a fascinating piece of literary work. As for me the work is a real masterpiece exploring to its fullest, all possible resources in the art of poetry. This excellence and the everlasting meaning conveyed by the art work make it live over ages with no depletion to its artistic value.Works CitedSparknotes, “Dickinson’s poetry”, Sparknotes, 2008, Sparknotes, 21 Apr 2009,< http://www.sparknotes.
