Looking into the history of the success of mobile telephony in Ericsson shows not so pleasant beginnings however, these led to where the company is now. An analysis of the internal environment of Ericsson in the 80s and the 90s shows the strength of vision from among its employees especially with the SRA president at that time, Ake Lundqvist. His vision and ambition, despite the condescending attitude of the others from Ericsson, led them to sell the first mobile telephone in Saudi Arabia. Even when there were unsatisfactory conditions of the release, this did not discourage them from furthering their goals.
The weakness of the company at that time was of course, the condescending attitude of the others in the company and the way they see them at SRA as “not really part of (Ericsson)” since they were mere repairmen in their garage. If there would have been cooperation among the members and support in the vision of SRA, the release of mobile telephones would have been better and with little downside since R&D would have yielded better results. There wouldn’t have been so many quality problems with the production and also with the end product – mobile phones and systems – in the Saudi Arabia release.
The opportunities available at that time was great since this was a time when the technology was still transitioning from wires and switching to wireless and mobile. If the support would have been with SRA then the mobile telephony would have been introduced earlier not just for industrial purposes but personal as well. Their connection or relation with NMT can also be considered an opportunity. As stated in the case study, Ericsson submitted a deal with NMT not primarily for their interest in the development of mobile technology but more on their old ties.
