Pregnancy and Early Prenatal Development For couples that are engaging in risky sexual behavior that may result in an unwanted pregnancy, preparationfor pre-natal care should begin before conception. The womans health is of paramount importance as is the abstinence from drugs, alcohol, and smoking. For the man, it will require an emotional commitment to support the woman, as well as scheduling the time that will be required to help the woman bring a child to term. For couples that may wish to terminate the pregnancy, it is never too soon to do some self-introspection and research on the alternatives that are available.

The main components that are required for a healthy pre-natal period are the womans mental and physical health. The changes that the womans body goes through during this period will require regular mental and physical pre-natal check-ups by a professional health care provider, as well as an appropriate exercise program (Fetal Development). Physical health is vital, and "proper prenatal nutrition is essential for healthy fetal development" (Civitas). The woman will need to consult professional information to assure she is getting the adequate intake quantities of folic acid, iron, protein, fluids, and calcium (Civitas).

In addition, there may be foods that need to be reduced and substances, such as alcohol and tobacco, which need to be eliminated. In conclusion, risky sexual behavior that sometimes characterizes a college lifestyle may result in an unwanted pregnancy. The couple should be emotionally ready and the woman should be physically prepared. The pre-natal period should include proper nutrition, adequate exercise, and total abstinence from substances that can affect the healthy development of the fetus.
