kikomorians can be found in most dense parts of Japan such as Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Saitama, Kanagawa and Hokkaid as well as two metropolitan areas: Tokyo and Osaka. There are around 80 percent of hikikomorians are male but this is not the final number yet since some of the family do not report it. Although Rees (2002) have written in his articles, some of the journalists deny that it has reached millions. They estimated it at roughly 100 to 300 thousand only. Although this may be just one percent in Japan's population it has been an alarming issue for them.
Initially it was diagnosed by a psychiatrist named Tamaki Saito, the first therapist who wrote a book about hikikomori, to be a personality disorder that is related to schizophrenic but as their research progresses it was found out that hikikomori is not a mental disease as what others believed in. It is a behaviour mostly of the young people trying to seclude themselves away from society. It is also called as the social withdrawal and don't want to conform to the society. They can afford to turn away from the old ways.
(The Economist, 2000).In a Japanese society, young people are pressured to do than what is expected from them in order to succeed. This is just part of rebuilding the nation from the WWII and the other part is its being competitive with other nations especially when it comes to economy and technological advances in the world (Cybriwsky, et. al2006). Japan as one of the modern and wealthy industrialized nation in the world is still linked to conformity and resistant to change in any way it can.
After experiencing defeat during the World War II it found its way to focus on its economy and make it stronger and it has been consistent with its economic growth. The rise of its economy was also the fall. It was found out that hikikomori is neither a disease nor an illness still the government is taking time to eliminate the occurrence of hikikomori. Although there are still similarities and tendencies with other countries but the occurrence of it in Japan is intense. The educational system of Japan is playing a big part in shaping the minds and lives of its people.
Japan should be aware of that although it has been the practice ever since the visit of the missionaries. Diversity and heterogeneity in businesses should come hand and hand to further meet the demands of other countries without sacrificing its people. Although some argues that Japan should go back into the basics the youth should be taught on how to interact with their peers. They should see that every person is diverse and has its own and unique characteristics so everyone should know about it.
Learning other languages is one way of communicating with others and to keep away the shyness and low level of confidence. With the advanced technologies in front of Japan these should be maximised to the make use of it to the fullest. Institutions such as the New Start, Kudo Centre and among others are a manifestation that a person who suffers from hikikomori will still have hope and future although they think that they are not intelligent enough to compete with others in terms of prestigious jobs in big companies.
The hikikomori can be minimized through the efforts of the government of Japan, the schools where the children go to and the basic unit of the institution the family where they learn the basics of everything.
