The issue of schooling, curriculum, and related government policies has always been contentious because people (rightly or wrongly) blame the education system if there is stagnation in the economy of a nation. This blame game also happens when graduates who are ready to face the world are unable to find jobs because more competent and qualified youth from other countries fill up the positions available. Most governments have formulated policies regarding school education so that they may have a control in the education system.

They do this in the hope of raising the standards of education and to bring about a universality of curriculum and teaching. This is true for the United Kingdom as well. But as in many developed nations, strong criticism about the inadequacy of the current system has been overheard. Children who pass out are unable to compete with foreign job seekers. This paper is an attempt at analyzing the consequences of government policies on the secondary and comprehensive school system in the country. The focus will primarily be on the admission procedure and will give suggestions for improvement based on literature available on modern trends and practices in educational systems in the developed world.

The personal views, ideas, and suggestions of the writer (of this paper) on the issue will also be included. There was a time in UK when the higher education system was highly skewed in favour of the more privileged sections of the population. The system was mainly under private control by charitable organizations and the church. There was no common curriculum and individual schools could have their own systems and curriculum. This was during the early 1900s which continued until the end of the Second World War The system at that time called 11+ required children to move on to the so called grammar schools or the secondary moderns unofficially
