Human Resource Management in Health Care - Phase Task The technological improvements in health care have created an increased demand to take care of people with any kind of disease. With the increasing number of people coming for checkups and treatment for even the minutest problems, the staff at the hospital/clinic falls short to cater all the patients. With the higher paying hospitals/medical care facilities employing most of the medical professionals, the lesser successful hospitals are left in need of more staff.

Jones Pediatric Services wants to expand its business, however with the current shortages in medical profession it will be extremely difficult to get hire skilled and good quality of employees. The medical care facilities are falling short of staff in these three areas. 1. NursingIn the United States, about 94% of the nurses are female out of the nations 2.7 million workers. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that more than one million new and replacement nurses will be needed by 2012.

The reason for the shortage is described to be the added taxes they have to pay and the added pressure on health care facilities to cut corners by letting nurses go. The shortages created by these put extra pressure on the remaining nurses. According to the survey conducted by the American Nurses Association, nurses feel burnt out, stressed and unable to provide quality healthcare. (Uretsky, 2005) (Ginty, 2004)The solution to increase the supply of nurses lies basically with the government by adopting policies for funding.

However at an organizational level, the managers should try to treat the nurses more professionally. Limiting mandatory overtime can be another way to reduce burnout of nurses hence increasing the standard of nursing which would lead to more students to come towards the nursing field. Offering high rewards and peace of mind as job characteristics would further attract nurses to join JPS rather than other hospitals. (Ginty, 2004)2. PhysiciansThe American Medical Association in its newspaper (Jan. 5, 2004) claimed that there was a looming crisis of physician shortage which will inevitably increase.

The reason for the shortfall is some cases isn’t really because of the unavailability or supply of physicians but because of an unequal geographic distribution. Due to the trends in urbanization, the distribution of physicians in certain areas of US has become asymmetric. The lack of appeal in certain regions of the country, lower pays as well as the inability of disadvantaged communities to support specialist care monetarily lead to a tendency for physicians to set themselves up in major cities where at least their income is satisfactory.

(Elliott, 2004); (Nair, 2004)The hiring plan in such a case for the JPS can only work if certain conditions regarding the monetary stability and reward system are met. However by increasing the appeal of the care centers and by using the proper marketing channels, JPS can attract newly graduated medical students to join its workforce. 3. PharmacistsAccording to the National Association of Chain Drug Stores figures, about 5,500 vacancies are there for pharmacists in US. In addition, there currently are some 2,800 unfilled hospital pharmacist positions according to a May 2003 survey of pharmacy directors by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

the shortage is is because of the increasing prescriptions since technological advancements has made more diseases curable then they were before. According to the pharmacy dean and professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy, the shortage in due to broadening industry where pharmacists are being hired. (Johnsen, 2003) (Pal, 2002)Being a health care provider, JPS needs a quality pharmacy with high quality pharmacists. In the age of increasing demand for pharmacists, JPS can fulfill its share by working with the medical institutes to breed more pharmacists.

by offering to pay off student loans if they join JPS, the medical center can operate to its capacity while developing social care goodwill in the industry which is necessary for all organizations in the time of cut throat competition.
