a series of studies conducted and described in three specific research articles in an attempt to describe the appropriateness and structure of the modern research project in this field of interest. In the research paper entitled “Internationalization of SMEs: Inward-Outward Patterns and Government Policy”, the researchers intended to uncover the specific dynamics of a series of SMEs in Finland which highlighted the focus of activities associated with internationalisation within this region.

This particular paper did not propose any specific theory of which to justify through research, rather the authors intended to point out that minimal research data existed which brought emphasis to the inward international operations. This lack of available research focus on inward activities constituted the study’s intention: To determine the extent to which companies who were actively involved in internationalisation efforts remained focused on the inward operations required to launch a successful internationalisation campaign.

Thus, the authors’ recognition that inward operations are a minimally-scrutinised research objective laid the foundation for the study’s initiation. This particular research study was exploratory in nature, as it did not seek to predict future internationalisation efforts, nor did the research intention pursue to understand the analytical elements (the why and how) in an attempt to classify business leaders in either a positive or negative light; regardless of their level of focus toward inward or outward internationalisation efforts.

In fact, in support of their acknowledgment of the lack of pre-existing research data on inward operational activities, the study highlighted a rather minute literature review, simply highlighting the broad differences between inward and outward internationalisation campaigns. In addition, rather than proposing a theory of what constituted the most effective or appropriate method, and then attempting to justify
