Invocation to the Muse- An Invocation to the Muse is a literary term that is used to let the reader know that the writer is about to work in poetic terms.   
Chansons de Geste- Chansons de Geste is a French term, translated into English as songs of great deeds. The chansons de Geste were songs or poetry of great battles and war.
Oral Epic- An Oral Epic is a long narrative poem orally spoken or performed over the years.  For example, Homer’s “Odyssey” and “Iliad” are forms of an Oral Epic.  Both the “Odyssey” and “Iliad” were passed down for many generations, but Homer was credited for first putting these stories down in writing.
Demi-god- A Demi-god is a half-human half-god.

Aeneas and Roland are the heroes of “Iliad” and “The Song of Roland” respectively.  Both Aeneas and Roland are leaders and soldiers.  Aeneas led the Dardanians, Trojan allies, during the Trojan war. After Troy was lost, Aeneas went to Italy to regroup. The proud and courageous Roland led the rear guard of the French forces under Charlemagne during Charlemagne’s seven-year campaign in Spain.  Aeneas was the hero of an oral epic, whereas Roland was the hero of a chansons de Geste.
