Critical Analysis: How Far the Concept of A Single Middle Class In Modern Britain Concept Of Middle Class – Introduction From the studies of sociologists Browne and Cannadine (2002,1998) In our daily lives, a lot of of us make use of the language of class to pass on to a communal ladder and 'knowing ones place' inside it. Class is a subject of 'breeding' and of social environment. It is mirrored in our feelings and our standards of living, our inflections, and our habits of clothing. Middle Class Or Middle Classes From the studies of Griffiths and Hope (2000) Middle class or classes can be categorized by many criteria’s such as by professions. This includes owners of medium-sized businesses, Managers, Clerical workers, Owners of small businesses (the petite bourgeoisie) and Retail workers. The difference between these occupations can be studied on the basis of work status (Employer, Self-employed, Employee), Prestige, Pay, Gender bias in each group, Entry qualifications, Length of training required or mandatory to qualify, Age at entry into the occupation. The difference between the workers of these occupations in Middle Classes is of different levels such as Work status that includes Employer (Professions, Owners of medium-sized businesses, Owners of small businesses), Self-employed (Professions, Owners of small businesses), Employee (Professions, Semi-Professions, Managers, Clerical workers, Retail workers). Griffiths and Hope (2000) further investigated that in middle classes there is one basic aspect of Prestige within the working class that again falls into different stages such as High Prestige (Professions, Owners of medium-sized businesses, Some managers), Medium Prestige Holders (Semi-Professions, Managers, Some petite bourgeoisie, Clerical workers), Low Prestige Holders (Petite bourgeoisie, Retail workers, Possibly some clerical workers). There is one more remarkable difference between these classes of Middle Classes that is of Pay. Professionals are paid in middle classes as Highest Pay Holders (Professions (top decile), Owners of medium-sized businesses, Some managers). Some are paid highly but high (Semi-professions); second high (Managers) and third highly too many petite bourgeoisies. Medium paid middle classes professionals include some managers, some semi-professions (fourth to seventh decile), Clerical workers that include some petite bourgeoisie. Low paid professionals consist of some clerical workers; Retail workers (eighth + ninth decile), some petite bourgeoisie and the lowest paid professionals are some retail workers (tenth decile). Gender also plays an important role in the life of Middle Classes in Modern Britain. Gender bias in each group can be categorized as Professions who are largely male but many younger lawyers, medical doctors are female. Men more often hold Semi-professionals, which includes large female presence but managerial jobs. Managers consist of top managers - largely male; General run of managers includes many women. Clerical workers consist of 78% female in 2001. Retail workers are largely female. Conclusion- Modern Significance Of Middle Classes In Britain It might be reasonable to say that middle class is dead or speedily disappearing in Britain. Working class traditions is no longer as consistent as it once was, and the higher circle is less perceptibly disconnected from remaining of society. It is no longer as easy as it once was to choose out someone’s class by, for instance clothing or pronunciation (Fulcher J. & Scott, 2003, Pg 696-697). Britain - perhaps more accurately England - is now officially a middle-class country: of the working population no less than 54.4% have professional, managerial or clerical jobs. The suggestion that Britain has become a "middle class country" almost presupposes that poverty has been eradicated. The existence of a large number of very poor members of the working class, who may or may not be in work, and who are sometimes called the underclass, suggests that poverty has not been eradicated. There are still children who go to bed hungry and sleep under threadbare blankets, not because their parents do not care but because economic circumstances forces these parents to scrimp and save so that not all things are possible. People in 2002 are better housed than they were in 1932 or 1962. The older houses have been re-furbished: new fittings, new kitchens, new bathrooms, replacement windows and the surviving oldest houses are those which have had the most care lavished upon them. If we examine entry into higher education in the 1990s we can see that whilst the children of all socio-economic groups have increased rates of participation in university education the change has favoured the children of people with higher professional occupations. Even in 1991-92, they had a percentage participation rate that was equal to the combined participation rates of the children of intermediate level workers (those in the semi-professions) and clerical workers; the same is true in 1997-98. The children of skilled non-manual workers have around the average participation rate in each year, but while the rates for children of members of the working class have increased, these lag far behind those of members of the middle classes (on the widest possible definition). The widening access has benefited all but most significantly, the middle classes have seen the value of credentials and are prepared to invest time, money and delayed satisfactions in other areas to gain high educational qualifications. It probably remains true that "the longest walk a boy from a working class home ever makes is that he undertakes alone on the first day at grammar school"; overcome this, the highest hurdle and it is possible to progress (Fulcher & Scott, 2003). Sadly, still, few seem able to climb the ladder. The working class boy who succeeds in one of the higher professions remains a rarity; the working class girl even more rare.
