Summary of the case Ann Rhoades the executive vice president is thinking about the very exciting start up year. Jet Blues service from 9 departures per day had increased to 50 per day in 11months the fleet had grown from 2 planes to 10 new planes every year through the end of 2003 bringing the fleet count to a 40. The jet blue teams had grown from 10 to a 1000 and with the arrival of each new plane a 100 more recruitment were expected and so within 4 years the employment was to increase to 5000. Ann Rhoades had gained experience and skill to overcome new challenges while she was working with the south west airlines as a Human resource head .She recognized that Jet Blue's expansion goals were far more aggressive than she had ever met before. Jet Blue Was the best ever funded airline n the aviation history of U.S.The aim was to bring humanity back to air travel. Also the airline aimed at having a paperless airline .the company focus was efficiency and service. The company thinks of them as advocates of their customers. David Neelman was the founder of Jet Blue Airlines. Neelman with his experience and new ideas gave jet blue a new look and setup a target market where they could bring back humanity to air travel jet blues top management team was a virtual team in many respects . The geographical dispersion of the top management team reflected the diverse lifestyles and preferences of Jet Blue's top management. They intended to take the best from all airlines and apply it to Jet Blue. Rhoades emphasized on defining values and making them comprehendible to the team at jet Blue. Rhoades believed values were that drove the other activities around in an organization. All was going well with the airlines but now Rhoades was thinking how they would sustain this level of performance where they ere looking to serve airline travelers low fares, but high quality service. Key Issues: Jet Blue Airline intends to achieve rapid growth while building a value based high commitment organizational culture. Why were talented and reputable people attracted to Jet Blue Airline venture The management needs to realize this, why because then they would know how to retain them. The company had to make major decisions on selection of home base and the types of aircraft. This was vital as it was to affect the whole performance level of the Airline. They wanted to hire the right kind of individuals The operations were going well, but Rhoades was thinking how they could maintain success through long periods of sustained growths. Also what it would take from them to achieve these targets of growth while remaining productive and flexible Recommendations: The case summary stated above gives us a brief outlook but yet entails all aspects of the case being discussed. Jet Blue Airline is new in the airline industry; it has already had one successful year of operations. The management consists of the most reputable, and experienced individuals of the aviation industry. We observe high capitalization has been done for the project. The aim of the top management is to offer low fares to people yet give them the best flying experience (i.e. the best quality of service ) we would making a few recommendations with reference to the key issues identified above . In order for jet Blue Airlines to be able to develop a value based high commitment culture along with rapid growth it is vital for organization's management's to understand the meaning and importance of an organization's culture, how it affects the performance and productivity. As we are aware that by definition culture is a set of norms, beliefs, and expectations. In order for organizations to be successful they need to consider what are the factors that influence an organizations culture. The management at Jet Blue Airlines needs to consider also that the external environment which most importantly consists of the competitors effect the culture. Here we are looking at a high performance culture. in order to achieve this the employees at jet blue airline have to plan and conceive their actions according to the trends of the environment , they should be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the company , they should also be able to comprehend how they will assess the external environment as threats, opportunities or constraints for their organization . As far as the fact that all the reputable and talented people were, attracted to the Jet Blue venture, it was because Jet Blue was offering all these individuals to start from scratch. In the best way they thought would be. The top management was making decisions, but all were given space and the forum to participate suggest so that all could work together towards achieving those aims. Also all these reputed individuals wanted to bust the unions and they were getting a chance to do so being at Jet Blue Airlines. Another major issue in hand was that how would the company be able to maintain success through long periods of sustained growths. This the company can very well do by internally coming with a model, a model wherein it would act like guide line as to how the success can be maintained through continuous efforts of a certain level by the employees and how the growth levels can be sustained without loosing out on any. For example P&G also has made considerable progress in reinvigorating growth across products and geographies by adopting a new "Connect + Develop" model. The model enables new business initiatives by helping the company learn from both proprietary and open networks of customers, suppliers, technology leaders and innovators. P&G is working with external organizations such as NineSigma and InnoCentive to create technology and scientific problem briefs that can be shared with its network of thousands of possible solution providers worldwide. The company is also working with Your Encore to connect with hundreds of top retired scientists and engineers from more than 150 companies with client businesses. Growth levels can only be sustained if the input is as high as possible. I.e. higher efforts on part of the employees and management. Furthermore Jet Blue Airlines can achieve their targets of growth by remaining flexible i.e. being able to adapt to external environment's changing trends, also market changing trends. This identification of changing trends will help the top management modify their policies keep their employees motivated and keep the revenue levels high. Overall, the operation side seems to be running smoothly. Though we notice a heavy capitalization amount. We also realize looking at the growth chart that with current policies and procedures the company has been able to achieve higher growth percentages. But what should be noticed that between the months of august and September the growth chart is seen taking a dive. But then we observe a rise again .as long as the company keeps itself growing, adaptable to external trends and changes. The company would be able to grow well.
