Extract of sample "Math and the Internet"

We can divide the Internet into two main parts -the hardware and software parts - both equally important for the global network. The hardware is a main part of the Internet - it is comprised of servers and personal computers. The information is represented electronically using different levels of voltages. For instance, a 0 could be represented by a 0 voltage and a 1 could be represented by a voltage of 3 volts. To avoid overheating the voltage levels must to below which means that each piece of information on the computer can be represented with values 1 or 0.

The common language of arithmetic is the decimal number system. Normally we use a numbering system referred to as base 10. Digits in this system may take the values 0 through 9. In any base "n" (where n is a positive integer), digits may take values from 0 to "n-1"; so in base 2 (the binary system) the digits can have values 0 or 1. This is why the information on the computer can be represented only in binary and each piece of information is called 'bit' (from "BInary digiT). In the binary number system, each number larger than 1 requires multiple bits and each consecutive place value is a power of two.

Using that we can convert any binary number into decimal and vice versa. The software part is the part we can see - it is the operating system on the PC, the websites we open, the different programs we use. But behind the eye-catching designs and graphics, we will find a complicated program created in any of the programming languages - C++, Visual Basic, Assembler, etc. And math is on the basis of all of them. The complicated math cycles, formulae, and logic are the main part of all software. These days many websites are not created with any HTML editors - they also use programs so we can describe them as being like 'small programs'.

Not only because they are dynamic, allowing people not only to look but to change them, (mainly database functions) but because the language they had been written in - PHP - is very close to the program languages. These are only a few examples illustrating the connection between math and the Internet - and are good illustrations of how math will always be one of the most important sciences in our lives.
