R.Preeti 11/5/2008 VIRGINIA GOVERNMENT The Virginia Government was framed in a manner that would make it accountable to the people living in the region and would serve the public with utmost dedication and loyalty. Due to the expanse of the activities that the Government has come about to handle, this has been slightly difficult over the years. Here is a proposal for change in the government. The Constitution of Virginia lays down the system of 'term limits'.

This translates into meaning that the Governor of Virginia is subject to a one-term limit. In other words, the Governor of Virginia, who is considered to be the most powerful Governor among all other states, is subject to a term s of four years and nothing more. In my view, this system of 'term limit' can be altered to suit the current needs of the state and its governmental functioning. I feel that the term limit for the Governor should be increased.

It could be made up to at least a two-year term, which means the Governor will be able to hold the office for eight years at length. The flip side of the change in the term limit feature would be the decrease in the terms of the members of the Legislative Assembly. The term limits could be decided upon, for the members of the State Senate and differently for the House of Delegates. In my opinion, a four-year term with a term limit of a single term, for the Governor would be limiting.

It would hamper the long-term vision of an elected Governor, who could implement a number of proposed policies and activities in the extended term. This would, however be subject to whether he would get elected the next time or not. Extension of the term limit would only add to the laying down, planning and execution of long-term plans that would turn out to be beneficial to the public. This would also help the Governor work harder and better, in order to procure and secure the votes of his public, the next term around.

By introducing a term limit for the members of the legislative assembly, one could certainly oust bad performers and those who are not really into public service. This would bring about further efficiency and add to the betterment of the public; without hampering the vision for long-term policies. Thus, these changes can be introduced to bring about betterment of the Virginia citizens.
