“There’s nothing else important in this life than to have its freedom…” (Words stipulated by the American-Spanish Philosopher George A. Santana on his book The Life of Reason- Reason in Art). The researcher crossed or chooses to discuss “Freedom” in his introductory line to put aid in conceptualizing the kind of system mentioned in the story of African slavery. Slavery connotes such low esteem or characteristic of describing its manner as that links to hopelessness and the attitude of the incapacity to be free. Hence, these elements are the sentiments of the researcher could illustrate present in the situation of the subject in the story, thus, the absence of such elements to whom the subject is envious and desperate to have and by which the whites or white men, as being addressed in the story, has it's filled of it.
Moreover, in these instances, we might say that freedom is imaginary. Imaginary in the sense that the subject's will, which was the core of his being, was stripped of him as he then become a slave by none of his choice or against his will. Here, we can begin to identify or have first identified the points or key features in the system of African slavery. It is for the reason of adopting the context of how his will was scarce or limited for him in his state as a slave. In this manner, the idea or condition of its identity as a slave connotes less value of his being, and that his being becomes only mechanical compared to a puppet having its body but doesn’t have a mind of its own. These instances were seen through the moment of his captivity with her sister, the trading of which he was sold as a slave and his experience as a slave having masters that would decide for him his actions.
Second, the manner of treatment the subject experience in navigation adds to more suffering he had as a slave on the boat. In that situation, he then experienced begging and was fascinated by the goodness of the white men to offer them food to eat but never did happen. In having the concept of empathy, there we realize their struggles, misfortunes and wishful thought of death as the only means for them to get rid of and escape from their suffering. Here, freedom is nevertheless invincible in the apprehension of the researcher about the subject. It seems freedom is like a word that the subject failed or never seeks, but at the same time, allows it to fade away as he opens his eyes back to his reality. And such misery ends not until he shall have the courage to seek it and persuade the idea of dread and fear.
The analysis of the subject’s situation is that freedom is the idea of the dead. It is because he mostly thinks about the negative way or aspect if he tries to escape and allows the rest of his life to become a slave. He suffers because he allows it to happen. Not to be unfair on the part of the subject, he might have that spirit or courage to reach and grasps his freedom back, in some way, the researcher finds in ignorance the reason for the subjects suffering, though his experience convinces and teaches him to get rid of it. Therefore, this situation marks the absence of happiness and the chance to enjoy in life his freedom.
The researchers stand against this story and find it unfavourable to the subject and the author of this story. In this sentiment, the researcher disagrees in the manner that happiness failed to mention in the story. Yes, there might be or have this kind of occasion. In reality but not to expose only the negative side but also the positive. In this condition, he finds it biased to the reader of the story. It is in the sense that the story centred most on the suffering of the subject as a slave. Thus, its sentiment becomes so cruel and has to view life as absurd. On the other hand, let us have the idea that even a slave has its own experience of happiness. Here, we will discover probably, even in his life as a slave; he peeks for a little amount of happiness it might be in the absence of the knowledge of his masters. In this departure, the reader may not focus or have seen the other part but the totality of its views. Thus, readers will understand his life, and not judge life and that happiness is not hard to find if we seek it and that is freedom.
