By placing a tale within a tale, the author is able to create for the reader a clear understanding of what parts of the story should be focused on-what is important and what can be skipped over. At the same time, this style allows the reader to feel the strength and power of the story being told, while it still maintains its simple background. At the beginning, the reader is presented with two characters, the visitor and the native. It is the visitor who asks the questions, and who brings about the story.

He comes with his own background and beliefs about the natives, and so, along with the reader, is more fully educated to how the people lived.
