Friendship: John and Chris The gun lay there on the table. It seemed to bask in the glow of the moon, as the beams of white light cascaded through the window and riveted across the barrel. Johnny didn’t know how he got into this situation. Things had seemed so easier a few days ago. Everything had been going right for him. Then it seemed, as quick as a bold of lightening or a crash of thunder would sneak across the sky, everything changed. Next thing he knew, he was alone in the room with the gun, a clean mission in mind. Life hadn’t always been hard for Johnny. He had grown up in a well to do neighborhood, with loving and caring parents. He attended one of the best schools in the state, and graduated one of the top of his class. The summer before college, that was when the seams of his life began to come unwoven, and he slowly sat by and watched his life fall apart. His great life, at first, only seemed to become greater. The days after graduation were great, and he enjoyed the last summer before college. He hung out with his friends, and it was at one of his friend’s houses, that the words were spoken that put his whole life into chaos. Chris and Johnny had been friend his entire life. Chris was the kind of guy who you either loved or hated, depending on how much you could put up with him. To some he was the personification of am all the time stand up comic, other couldn’t stand his flair for life. It was Chris, the fun filled lover of life, who first pushed Johnny down the stairs. Literally. It was all a big joke, the boys all messing around at Chris’s house. However, Chris had had one to many drinks, and Johnny had had a little to few. Chris started pushing Johnny around, and Johnny began to push back. Before anybody knew what was happen, Chris yelled “Come on Johnny. You just need to lighten up a bit more. A few drinks into you, and you wouldn’t mind me pushing around.” “Chris, your way overboard. If you don’t slow down, somebody is going to get hurt.” “Like this?” Chris pushed Johnny up against the guard rail of the stairs. Johnny could recall staring out the window behind Chris as his back was bent backwards across the metal rail. His last memory was of the white wall of snow falling outside the window, and then he fell. Falling would be somewhat of an understatement. Leaves fall. Lover’s fall for one another. Fall can also describe a season where many things change and begin to prepare for winter. But Johnny, he fell hard, and came down hard. He rolled down the stairs, like a limp young kid falling down a slide, and continued falling until he reached the bottom of the stairs, exactly 72 stairs later. The rest of what happened; Johnny had to rely on the memory of the rest of his friends. Johnny awoke three days later in a soft, yet not as comfortable as his own, hospital bed. He was surrounded by Chris, and three of his other friends, all amazed to see him awake. Johnny could see that, despite all his friends being there, his parents were nowhere to be found. “Where are my mom and dad?” Johnny softly ushered. “John, you need to get your rest. Don’t try to talk.” “What happened to me?” “John, you fell. You fell hard. The doctors say you are lucky to be alive.” “Chris, Chris, why did you do it?” “John, I’m sorry man. Your fall was as much a surprise to you as it was to me.” Chris then relayed the rest of the story to Johnny. Chris had then called the ambulance, who rushed Johnny to the ER. The cops also had come, and had arrested all the kids drinking at the party. All of Johnny’s friends were now under prosecution for underage drinking. Chris then apologized, and Johnny fell back into sleep, dreaming of a quick recovery. Chris watched as Johnny fell asleep. Had he done the right thing not telling him? In his condition, the bad news might effect how well he recovered. However, Chris still had a nagging feeling he should have told Johnny the rest of what happened that night. Johnny walked out of the hospital two weeks later, with full motion in all of his body recovered. The doctors say he just missed snapping his neck, and was lucky to be alive and walking out the door so soon. However, Johnny laughed when he looked back at this moment, and wished he could have stayed in that safe, naïve, hospital bed. Chris had come to pick up Johnny. Johnny nocited that Chris was not driving back to his house, as he had assumed. “Chris, where are we going?” Chris shut off the engine, took out the key, and parked, right there on the side of the road. “John, there is more to tell you from that night. The doctors told me not to tell you this while you were in the hospital. And I feel bad John, I really do. John, you remember how it was snowing that night.” “Chris, where is this going?” “John, your parents died that night. They cam rushing over to my house when they heard what happened, and it was snowing, and John, I am so sorry.” That was the last time John saw Chris. John had walked home, and now was in the room, alone with the gun. His parents were dead, and he was lucky to be alive. He wasn’t quite sure what his next move would be, but he pocketed the gun, and left his house, hoping to never see those four walls again. Read More
